In its initial release, “Captain America: Brave New World” claimed the top spot at the box office, raking in $88 million over three days and $100 million during the extended Presidents’ Day weekend. Globally, it has already earned $192 million, indicating a strong appetite among viewers for a fresh MCU production and eagerness to witness Captain America battling the Red Hulk. However, the opening weekend figures are merely the beginning of the box office saga. Given the high cost associated with producing an MCU movie, how much revenue does “Captain America: Brave New World” need to generate to avoid being labeled a failure?
According to Deadline’s report, for Captain America: Brave New World to turn a profit, it must rake in approximately $425 million worldwide at the box office. Given that the production cost was $180 million and the marketing expenses remain undisclosed, any earnings beyond this figure would be considered profit for both Walt Disney Studios and Marvel Studios. The film has earned $192 million in its initial three days, leaving it needing an additional $233 million to reach its break-even point during its theatrical release.
Given the success of previous Captain America films such as Captain America: The First Avenger, which earned $370 million worldwide, it’s plausible that Brave New World could meet its target. It’s important to note that these movies had lower budgets and were part of a relatively new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that was gaining traction among audiences. Captain America: The Winter Soldier grossed $714 million, while Captain America: Civil War brought in an impressive $1.15 billion worldwide. However, these films received better critical acclaim than Brave New World and were released during the peak of the MCU’s popularity.
Box Office Chances of ‘Captain America: Brave New World
It’s reasonable to expect that “Captain America: Brave New World” could reach the $425 million mark without much difficulty, given that movies like “Eternals” and even “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” have managed impressive grosses during challenging times. Despite being labeled as one of Marvel’s less successful films at the box office, “Eternals” still raked in $402 million worldwide, and this was when cinemas were just starting to reopen post-COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” managed a global gross of $476 million and a modest profit for Disney. Although Disney would undoubtedly prefer a blockbuster hit, a movie that recoups its investment at the box office and possibly sells merchandise is more advantageous than a flop like “The Marvels.
It’s clear that the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” will encounter some challenges ahead. Critics and audiences have given it some of the lowest ratings in the MCU, with a CinemaScore of B- – the first time this franchise has received such a score. This negative word of mouth could result in a significant decrease in box office revenue over the next few weeks. However, it does have an advantage over some other MCU titles, like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Black Widow,” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” as it can tap into international markets, including China, which those films did not exploit.
Currently, there aren’t many big blockbuster films set to release in the next fortnight that are likely to compete with “Captain America: Brave New World.” However, lesser-known titles such as “The Monkey,” “Mickey-17,” and “Novacine” could potentially catch everyone off guard.
