As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been following the box office closely, and it’s been a tough ride this year. Despite Captain America: Brave New World claiming its third consecutive No. 1 spot at the box office, it was a bittersweet victory for us movie lovers. You see, while Captain America 4 raked in $15 million domestically, the weekend’s earnings marked the lowest of 2025 so far, dealing another significant financial blow to the struggling theater business. In total, this weekend’s releases managed a dismal $52.4 million, which is a stark reminder of the challenges we’re facing in the cinema industry.
As a seasoned movie critic, I must admit that the weekend from February 7th to the 9th this year has left a rather disappointing mark on the cinematic landscape of 2025. With a dismal box office revenue of just $53.9 million across all titles, it’s safe to say that this three-day period now holds the unwanted title of the poorest financial weekend of the year so far.
Leading the pack was the film adaptation of Dog Man, managing a meager $13.8 million. The lingering effects of COVID-19 on our moviegoing experiences are undeniable, and while there was hope that the theater business would make a strong comeback post-pandemic, it appears that chains like AMC Theatres continue to grapple with challenges today.
Reflecting on June 2021, a single AMC stock share was sold at approximately $261.00. In contrast, an investor could have acquired the same stock for just $14.00 in spring 2020, when the pandemic first surfaced. Fast forward to today, five years into the pandemic’s onset, a single AMC share costs only $3.30. The summer of 2022 may see an improvement in theater business with upcoming blockbusters like “Superman,” “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” and “Jurassic World Rebirth” gracing the silver screen. Despite these potential gains, the persistent poor financials hint at a challenging future for the moviegoing experience. Additionally, the rapid release of new movies on streaming platforms is putting significant pressure on the cinema industry.
‘Captain America 4’ Approaches $350 Million Worldwide
The blockbuster hit “Captain America: Brave New World,” starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford, is steadily approaching a global gross of $350 million, thanks to its successful weekend earnings. At present, it has accumulated $341.8 million worldwide, but it lags behind other Captain America films in the franchise. Nevertheless, “Captain America: The First Avenger’s” unadjusted global box office total of $370.6 million is a significant milestone that “Captain America: Brave New World” is aiming to surpass.
Over the weekend, the newcomer “Last Breath” took home the second spot at the box office with an earnings of $7.8 million. On the other hand, last week’s runner-up film, “The Monkey,” experienced a 55% decrease in earnings between its first and second weekends, ending up in third place with $6.4 million. The fourth spot went to “Paddington in Peru,” which added another $4.5 million to its domestic total, now standing at $31.4 million. However, the lovable bear is doing significantly better overseas, raking in $133 million so far. This brings the worldwide total for “Paddington 3” to an impressive $164.4 million within just three weekends of its release.
Over the weekend, “Dog Man” landed in the Top 5 with a gross of $4.2 million. Directed and starring Peter Hastings, this unexpected animated adventure surpassed financial expectations significantly, earning a global total of $113.1 million. Despite being available for rental ($19.99) or purchase ($24.99) through popular VOD platforms, viewers can now enjoy it from the comfort of their homes.
The crime drama “The Accidental Getaway Driver” by Utopia took home the weekend’s highest per-theater average of $10,250. Debuting in four venues, it earned a total of $41,000 and served as a bright spot amid a rather lackluster final weekend of February. However, things may improve starting next week.
The upcoming movie “Captain America: Brave New World” might need some assistance in attracting viewers, as the Robert Pattinson-led film “Mickey 17” is set to hit the 2025 box office on March 7th. Predicted to earn between $15 million and $20 million during its opening weekend (as per Boxoffice Pro), “Mickey 17” could potentially boost ticket sales. Furthermore, several other films are slated for release during the first full weekend of March, such as “In the Lost Lands,” “Queen of the Ring,” “Seven Veils,” and “Night of the Zoopocalypse.” These new releases may help revitalize the movie-going experience after a financially dismal previous weekend.
