Carrie Fisher Had to Encourage Mark Hamill to “Embrace” ‘Star Wars’: “Get Over Yourself, You’re Luke Skywalker”

Once upon a time, in a distant galaxy… Mark Hamill was rather reserved when discussing his enduring impact on the Star Wars universe.

On NPR’s Fresh Air, the actor from The Life of Chuck reminisced about a time when Carrie Fisher, best known for playing Princess Leia, saw him in a Broadway show and found that he hadn’t mentioned his Star Wars role in the Playbill. Instead of ignoring it, she encouraged Hamill to proudly acknowledge his character Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, rather than downplaying it.

In the program’s biography section, I had detailed all my theater roles and added a note at the end that mentioned my fame from a series of well-liked space films. However, she questioned me about it, saying, “Why didn’t you include Star Wars in your list?”

In my bio on the Playbill, I listed all my theater experiences and mentioned that I am recognized for a series of popular space movies. But then she asked me, “Why didn’t you say anything about Star Wars?”

In my biography in the Playbill, I detailed my theater work and also noted my fame from some popular space films. However, she wondered why I hadn’t mentioned Star Wars.

Hamill recounted, “I explained, ‘I wish to demonstrate my extensive theater background,’ to which she retorted, ‘Come on, you’re Luke Skywalker and I’m Princess Leia. Just own it.’

For a considerable amount of time, the actor well-known for his role in “Star Wars” confessed that he partially understood her point and acknowledged that Carrie Fisher “offered a unique perspective” to him.

As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, I’ve been thrilled to see Mark Hamill reprise his role as Skywalker in shows like The Mandalorian. However, when asked about a potential return, he graciously stepped back, suggesting that the filmmakers should concentrate on the future and the array of fresh characters they’re introducing.

During an interview with ComicBook.com, Mark Hamill expressed his heartfelt thanks to George Lucas for including him in Star Wars back then. It was during a time when Lucas referred to Star Wars as ‘the most expensive low-budget movie ever made.’ Hamill shared that none of us anticipated it would turn into an enduring franchise and a significant part of popular culture. However, my sentiment is, I had my moment. I’m grateful for it. But I truly believe the focus should be on the future and the new characters.
