Carrie Underwood is set to perform at Donald Trump‘s second inauguration.
The well-known country musician is set to perform “America the Beautiful” at the January 20 inauguration event taking place at the U.S. Capitol, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.
Some followers of Underwood on social media were taken aback by this decision, as she generally doesn’t express overtly political views.
In 2019, the Grammy winner shared with The Guardian that they generally prefer to avoid politics when feasible, particularly in public discussions, because no one truly benefits from it. They expressed that the political landscape is chaotic, with people trying to simplify complex issues and draw clear-cut conclusions, but things aren’t as straightforward as black and white.”
Or, more colloquially:
“In 2019, the Grammy winner told The Guardian they usually steer clear of politics in public because no one really gains from it. They said it’s a messy situation where people try to simplify things and make everything seem clear-cut, but life ain’t always that simple.
Back in 2017, I got up on that CMA Awards stage alongside Brad Paisley and we had a little fun at someone’s expense. We sang a tune that took a playful jab at a certain figure, none other than Trump himself. It was all in good spirit, of course!
On various social media platforms, many expressed disappointment over Carrie Underwood’s decision to perform at Trump’s inauguration, predicting that it might negatively impact her career. Singer Cory A. Legendre commented, “I hope Carrie Underwood is receiving a substantial fee for her performance at Trump’s Inauguration, as I believe it could be one of the last significant performances she lands.” Conversely, supporters of Donald Trump praised Underwood’s decision, drawing comparisons with Taylor Swift endorsing Joe Biden in the previous year.
Trump has often found it difficult to persuade well-known personalities to appear at his functions. In 2017, a list of celebrities who declined invitations to perform at Trump’s inaugural event included Elton John, Garth Brooks, Céline Dion, Idina Menzel, and KISS.
During his election campaign last year, Trump’s team arranged for concerts featuring Kanye West, Jason Aldean, and Kid Rock.
This month’s inauguration is said to feature groups like The Armed Forces Choir and the Glee Club from the United States Naval Academy among its other artists.
In 2021, performers at Joe Biden’s inauguration included Brooks, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez.
