As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for action movies that dare to defy expectations, I must admit that my usual preference lies with thought-provoking dramas and mind-bending sci-fi. However, during the holiday season, one cannot deny the allure of an adrenaline-pumping action flick to bond with family over. Enter “Carry-On,” a film that, despite being far from my usual cup of tea, managed to leave me utterly spellbound – and not just because of Taron Egerton’s charming performance or the holiday setting.
It seems that many people, including their families, have enjoyed watching “Carry-On” this year, correct? For those who haven’t had a chance to see it yet, beware of potential spoilers!
2024 sees Netflix’s lineup bursting with original films, some of which have been fantastic hits, while others have left a bit to be desired. Whether you recall the captivating debut of “Hot Frosty” or were enthralled by the brilliantly directed “Woman of the Hour” by Anna Kendrick, there’s no shortage of choices – and now, “Carry-On” has been added to that impressive roster.
In this movie, an agent from the Transportation Security Administration finds himself in a predicament where he allows a potentially harmful weapon-laden carry-on bag to pass through security. Determined to thwart both the weapon and the suspected terrorist, he embarks on a mission. Although the film follows a common action movie formula, there was one sequence that left me absolutely astounded. Today, we’re going to delve into that remarkable scene.
I Enjoyed The Movie Overall As An Action Film
To set the stage, I must confess that action flicks aren’t my usual cup of tea. Don’t get me wrong, they can be enjoyable, but give me the captivating realms of top-notch fantasy films any day or perhaps an A24 movie with its intriguing twists and turns to truly engage me.
But I was home for the holidays, and my parents like action movies, so here we are.
Indeed, I must admit, I found the film quite enjoyable, especially for an action flick. It added a unique touch to have it set during the holiday season, though I wouldn’t classify it as a traditional Christmas movie. Taron Egerton was an excellent leading actor, and Jason Bateman delivered a solid performance. The action scenes, in particular, were thrilling and entertaining.
Similar to several of my colleagues at TopMob, I found myself noticing similarities with Toy Story 2, which I couldn’t help but notice. On the other hand, some minor flaws in Carry-On were hard to ignore and slightly disrupted the immersive experience. Despite these shortcomings, the movie is enjoyable and it’s easy to understand why it has gained such popularity. However, there was one specific scene that really elevated my enjoyment of the film to a higher level.
The Car Crash Scene Really Took The Cake For Me
I’m someone who enjoys an exhilarating car accident scene in movies. It really ramps up the tension – that nerve-wracking buildup before the crash, followed by the sudden shock when it happens. Or perhaps it’s a heart-stopping surprise that leaves both the characters and viewers on edge. Regardless, it’s an effective way to increase the drama in the film.
To me, the way they captured the car accident in Carry-On was truly remarkable. As soon as Elena Cole pulled out her gun, it became clear things weren’t going to be plain sailing like before. However, when the action unfolded on screen, I was left speechless.
As a movie buff, I’d rephrase it like this: “I found myself constantly switching between the tense confrontation between Cole and the phony up ahead, and the chaotic dance around them on the road. The blaring of horns and narrow escapes by other vehicles were a constant backdrop, while their own car veered wildly left and right. Suddenly, in a heart-stopping moment, their vehicle tipped over multiple times, leaving only an eerie silence for a brief instant.
Afterward, I found myself astonished, with my jaw dropped open, due to the skillful editing of the entire scene. It was exceptionally well-done and was among the select instances during the movie that caused me to lean forward attentively in my chair.
Even When Cole Was Fighting For Her Life Against The Imposter, I Was On The Edge Of My Seat
Even after the car accident, Cole’s struggle with the impostor is far from over as the impostor remains alive and determined to kill her.
Observing him extend his arm and gradually strangle her, witnessing her fight for survival, left me gnawing my fingernails anxiously as I felt helplessly powerless to intervene. Desperately wanting to shout at the screen for her to resist more, to escape – eventually, she manages to draw her gun and fire at him.
The sigh of relief that escaped me was happy, but I was still so thrilled that a Netflix film such as this one delivered in a significant way with this scene.
I Think More Car Crash Scenes Need To Be Done Like This One
Innumerable films feature automobile collisions or sequences, even an entire “Fast and Furious” series revolves around such incidents. However, I believe the auto collision scene in this production serves as an ideal blueprint for future depictions of vehicle crashes during intense combat scenes.
Instead of leaping straight to the crash, it drew out the incident, revealing the subsequent collisions and the havoc they wreaked, prolonging the audience’s anxiety. The crash, when it finally happened, seemed like a reward for the tension built up earlier, but the suspense continued with the imposter strangling her until the climax was reached with that final gunshot.
In my opinion, the way they’ve portrayed car accidents similar to this one is quite impressive, and I believe other films could benefit from learning this approach to infuse a touch of enchantment into their storytelling. It would significantly enhance their quality.
Right now, I’m considering watching some top-notch action films with spectacular car accidents to leave me amazed. It feels like the perfect moment for a film festival at home.
