Cassie Ventura, Cassie’s former partner Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ex, is preparing to testify in his upcoming trial. Instead of being referred to as “Victim 1,” she will use her own name when discussing her relationship with the rap entrepreneur. During the trial, she will be providing testimony to support him as he defends himself against accusations of federal sex trafficking and racketeering.
As a gamer speaking about my situation:
I, along with three other individuals who claim to be victims, will take the stand during Combs’s trial. In a recent court filing made by the prosecution on a Friday, it was revealed that the first witness, previously known as “Victim-1,” will no longer testify anonymously at the upcoming New York trial starting May 5th.
Combs stands accused of five counts related to three charges: racketeering, sex trafficking through force, fraud or coercion, and transportation for prostitution. He has entered a not guilty plea and firmly maintains his innocence regarding all allegations against him.
The prosecution stated that [Ventura] is ready to testify using her real name. On the other hand, Victim-2, Victim-3, and Victim-4 have requested anonymity from both the media and the public. Furthermore, they asked for pseudonyms to be used in court for all the other accusers.
They mentioned that this case has gained significant attention in the media so far, likely to grow as the trial continues. Implementing such measures is crucial to protect the victims’ privacy, shielding them from unwanted media scrutiny, harassment, and potential embarrassment or negative consequences that might arise if their real identities were exposed during the trial.
In November 2023, Ventura’s civil lawsuit against Combs, who was her partner from 2007 to 2018, was resolved outside of court a day after it was submitted. However, this settlement paved the way for numerous civil lawsuits against Combs, a prominent figure in rap and fashion, alleging various forms of sexual misconduct and criminal activities such as rape towards both women and men. As these new civil suits were being filed, three properties belonging to Combs were searched by the FBI, and he was apprehended on September 16. He has been refused bail on multiple occasions and is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
In May, Ventura found herself back in the spotlight after CNN released security camera footage from the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles. The footage showed Ventura exiting a room, followed by Combs who was seen assaulting her as they both waited for an elevator. In the video, Combs, wearing a robe, is captured kicking Ventura, pulling her hair, and pushing her to the ground. After the video’s release, Combs expressed remorse for his actions, but his lawyers claimed that CNN manipulated the footage in a court filing on March 13th. They argued that the network removed the timestamp, rearranged the sequence of events, and sped up the footage, stating that this did not accurately portray what truly happened.
On Thursday, I learned that federal authorities have leveled updated accusations against Combs, adding more severe charges of sex trafficking and facilitation of prostitution involving a second victim. Now, he’s facing the same initial three federal crimes, which stem from allegations that he ran a massive criminal organization. This organization reportedly involved assaulting and exploiting women, coercing them into performing at “freak off” events. In organizing these events, it’s alleged that Combs and his associates moved sex workers between states and across international borders.
According to the latest claim, Drew Combs is accused of actively recruiting, attracting, sheltering, transporting, procuring, acquiring, promoting, managing, frequenting, and soliciting [Victim-2]. He is also charged with attempting, aiding, and abetting, and intentionally causing [Victim-2] to perform commercial sex acts. This was allegedly done despite the knowledge that [Victim-2] was involved in these acts under the influence of force, deceit, or manipulation.
According to a statement made to The Hollywood Reporter, Combs’ legal team emphasized that all relationships and sexual encounters involving the mentioned women were entirely consensual.
They stated that these aren’t fresh claims or new accusers; instead, they are the same people – past long-term partners – who were engaged in consensual romantic relationships. The activities in question were part of their personal sexual encounters, marked by consent, rather than coercion.
In addition to the charges already facing Combs, another count was brought forth by a grand jury concerning a lesser sex trafficking offense, specifically the Mann Act. This law makes it illegal to transport someone with the intention that they will participate in prostitution. This allegedly involves two of the victims mentioned in the case. Previously, all these actions were charged as one violation under the superseding indictment.
In their revised case, prosecutors have added a new aspect to the racketeering charge, linking it to a fresh sex trafficking offense. This modification sheds light on accusations that Combs kidnapped and threatened one of the victims, including an incident where the victim was reportedly held over an apartment balcony. If proven guilty, this additional factor could potentially extend Combs’ jail term.
People magazine was the first to report the news.
