The rapid pace of cultural evolution, fueled by technology and social media, has undeniably reshaped the landscape of collecting, and it’s captivating to see how behaviors are adapting to this digital age.


In collaboration with “The Definitive List of 21st Century Icons” and a retrospective from the first part of the century, Catawiki and Hypemind are working together to conduct an extensive study that explores current tendencies and the anticipated trends shaping the future of collecting.

21st-century collecting has experienced significant transformations, introducing novel methods of accumulation and fresh categories. The swift advancement of culture – propelled by technology and social media – has significantly altered the landscape of collecting as well. By examining five major European markets and delving into the primary determinants shaping collection, the survey uncovers intriguing perspectives on how behaviors are adapting to the digital realm.

In each of the surveyed countries – France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and also Belgium – the 1,000 participants from each nation and an additional 500 from Belgium were posed a variety of questions designed to evaluate theories concerning demographic changes, advancements in digital culture, values linked with collecting, and innovative methods of ownership.

Approximately half of the adults polled are actively engaged in some form of collecting, spending an average of about €1,500 EUR ($1,600 USD) annually on their hobby. Furthermore, 30% of collectors intend to boost their spending over the next 3-5 years, suggesting that this trend is here to stay. Additionally, global data predicts a growing market for reselling items, while vintage technology is anticipated to become the latest hot trend as nostalgia cycles persist and evolve.

The survey detailed insights into the local markets with Germany set to become the highest spenders out of the five countries while being the most fashion-forward collectors. People surveyed in France, on the other hand, have an appreciation for aesthetics and are drawn to artistic value. As well as 74% seeing childhood nostalgia as a key driver for future collecting, French collectors are also shifting towards sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. Similarly, Belgian collectors are defined by a deep appreciation for heritage and history, who collect to learn new things, and 81% purchase items to keep them.

Italy, known for its rich collecting tradition, showcases the most active collectors across various markets, with as many as 96% participating in collecting-related activities. Furthermore, about 36% of these collectors aim to preserve their country’s heritage by saving valuable items to pass down to future generations. Interestingly, out of the five markets analyzed, the Netherlands boasts the highest average annual spending on collections, with 46% of its collectors driven by enjoyment and a desire to maintain connections within the creative industries.
