Cate Blanchett is set to be awarded the Freedom of the City of London, a centuries-old custom recognizing an individual’s significant impact on their community.
In recognition of their contributions to the arts, both the Australian actress and Northern Irish actor Adrian Dunbar have received the honor of being granted the city’s freedom.
Cate Blanchett is widely recognized for her award-winning performances in movies like “The Aviator” and “Blue Jasmine,” and for her notable roles within the “Lord of the Rings” series and most recently, “Black Bag.” Beyond her acting career, she’s an advocate for pressing issues such as climate change and serves as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, using her platform to support refugees and displaced individuals.
As a devoted fan, I’ll always remember Dunbar for his remarkable portrayal in the widely acclaimed U.K. police series “Line of Duty.” Recently, he’s graced our screens with his talent in shows like ITV’s “Ridley” and “Inside No. 9.
Apart from their roles on screen, both actors have graced the stage as well. This year, Cate Blanchett was featured in “The Seagull” at the renowned London venue, the Barbican, from February to April, while Kate Dunbar is currently starring in “Kiss Me, Kate” there, running from June to September this summer.
The Freedom of the City of London, an ancient custom, has been traced back as far as 1237. It’s widely thought that it has existed even before this date.
The Chair of the CLC’s Freedom Applications Committee, Alderman Russell, stated that Freedom is extended “as a method of honoring exceptional contributions to London or the public sphere, or as a means of celebrating an extremely notable accomplishment.
