CBS Axes ‘S.W.A.T.’ After Eight Seasons: The End of an Era?

After seven years, the hit crime series has come to its conclusion after eight seasons. This long-running television show, known for its captivating storylines, has had an exceptional run. Behind the scenes, there’s a tale as compelling as any episode, but now, sadly, it seems that this show’s story is truly over, even in the face of online protests.

The series lasted six seasons before getting initially cancelled in 2023. Surprisingly, CBS decided to bring it back for another season afterward. They then declared that Season 7 would be its last, but fans were astounded when they announced a Season 8 instead. After being rescued from cancellation twice, the show seemed unstoppable.

It appears that the end is near for the show following 163 episodes, as even the possibility of a reprieve seems unlikely now… or so it seems. Yet, there’s still a glimmer of hope left, isn’t there? Showrunner Andrew Dettman, however, seems to be accepting this final chapter for the series, as expressed in a statement published by Variety. In his own words:

It’s deeply disappointing to hear this news, especially considering how fantastic it has been collaborating with this talented cast and crew on a show we’ve all taken great pride in. They are an exceptional team who have consistently given their best and shown unwavering dedication throughout the eight seasons, facing numerous obstacles together. I can’t express enough gratitude for their efforts. It has been an honor to be a member of the S.W.A.T. family.

‘S.W.A.T.’s Cancelation Seems Permanent This Time

Even though a show that’s been rescued from cancellation twice by the same network might seem invincible, it appears that the fate of S.W.A.T. is not going to be miraculously changed by some unexpected intervention. Co-creator Shawn Ryan, along with Dettman, has expressed their appreciation for the journey and its conclusion.

I am deeply grateful to have been a member of the S.W.A.T. team. Working on S.W.A.T. for eight seasons and sharing the tales of Hondo and 20-Squad has been an extraordinary honor I will always cherish. I owe thanks to our fans, Shemar Moore, the rest of our talented cast, our dedicated producers from Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios, and CBS for this incredible opportunity. Above all, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our hardworking, tireless crew who consistently made our writers, directors, and actors shine. My primary concern at the moment is for their well-being.

The cancellation of S.W.A.T. marks a recent trend of concluding long-running crime series on CBS. Previously this week, FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted were also terminated. As with other networks, CBS is now prioritizing both financial performance and audience viewership. With streaming services expanding and posing a growing challenge to network television, it’s likely that more cancellations will follow in the near future.
