CBS will make a little bit of TV history when the 2024-25 season wraps.
This network is on track to complete its 17th uninterrupted season as television’s top broadcaster in prime time. This impressive run began during the 2008-09 season, surpassing the previous record of 16 consecutive seasons held by CBS, which was set between 1955 and 1970 when household ratings were the primary measure.
For 17 straight years, this network has been television’s leading broadcaster in prime time. This record-breaking streak started during the 2008-09 season, surpassing CBS’s previous record of 16 consecutive seasons between 1955 and 1970.)
Despite only a few weeks remaining until the conclusion of the TV season, according to Nielsen, CBS’ lead over its competitors is so substantial that it’s highly unlikely the rankings will shift. Consequently, much like last year and on several other recent occasions, CBS has already raised its victory flag.
The positive news is consistent: Out of the major broadcasters, three have boosted their primetime ratings compared to the same period last season, while ABC remains steady. This enhancement can be attributed mainly to the networks having a full season’s worth of content this time around. As writers and actors went on strike for improved contracts in 2023, most scripted programming was postponed to the first quarter of 2024. Consequently, seasons were shortened, and lower-rated shows filled the initial half of the 2023-24 season. In simpler terms, due to a writers’ and actors’ strike in 2023, most scripted content was delayed, leading to shorter seasons and fewer high-rated shows during the beginning of the 2023-24 season.
From April 20th, CBS has been seeing an average of 5.72 million viewers in prime time across all their programming, which is a 2% increase compared to the same period last year (approximately 2% more than 5.59 million viewers). NBC also shows a similar 2% increase with 5.1 million viewers. ABC’s viewership remains relatively unchanged at 4.28 million, just slightly below their 4.29 million from the previous year. Fox, on the other hand, has seen a substantial 14% rise to 3.83 million viewers – with the Super Bowl contributing significantly to this boost.
More to come.
