Celeste Developer’s New Game Canceled After Rights Dispute

Following the remarkable achievement of Celeste, there was great anticipation for the next game from the company, Earthblade. Regrettably, it appears that this game will no longer be released, as creators Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry have declared its cancellation. This news is disheartening on multiple fronts, especially since a metroidvania game by this studio seemed like an ideal fit.

On the Extremely Okay Games site, it was revealed that the eagerly awaited independent game has been canceled as part of a final update blog post. This metroidvania was officially scrapped around December, according to the blog, due to a disagreement over Celeste’s rights with co-founder Pedro Medeiros.

Here is the official statement on Earthblade’s cancellation:

“Celeste’s success applied pressure on us to deliver something bigger and better with Earthblade, and that pressure is a large part of why working on it has become so exhausting. Pedro isn’t to blame for this- in fact the split with him has given us the clarity to see that we have lost our way, and the opportunity to admit defeat. I feel many ways about it, but one big feeling is undoubtedly relief…We’re prototyping again and exploring at our own pace, and trying to rediscover game development in a manner closer to how we approached it at Celeste’s or TowerFall’s inception.”

The news has been quite disheartening as Earthblade, a game with immense promise, seems to have fallen short. Ever since its debut at The Game Awards, enthusiasts across the globe were eagerly anticipating playing it. Given the triumph of Celeste, it’s not hard to understand why this recent development has left everyone feeling let down.

In related news about terminations, Electronic Arts (EA) has discontinued their Origin launcher, opting instead to use their own application. On the other hand, SEGA is taking a more cautious approach by unveiling a membership program that rewards players with cosmetic items for simply logging into their service.
