Chamak-The Conclusion director Rohit Jugraj says show is about ‘Chamkila to Sidhu Moosewala’; shares his first-hand experience with extortion calls

In a little while, you can catch the film “Chamak-The Conclusion,” starring Paramvir Cheema and Isha Talwar. This forthcoming musical thriller series delves into the shadowy aspects of the Punjabi music scene and the intense pressures that artists face. Director Rohit Jugraj recently disclosed that he personally received threats in the form of extortion calls, providing a glimpse into the reality behind the scenes of the show.

Speaking via Zoom, Rohit Jugraj, the filmmaker, described Chamak-The Conclusion as “intricate and challenging.” He went on to say that he and SonyLIV agreed to put the series on hold for a while. Jugraj emphasized the daring narrative approach in addressing the current issue, raising questions about why Punjabi singers face such situations.

As a dedicated follower, I would express it as: “Sir Imtiaz [Ali] was the one who brought Amar Singh Chamkila into existence, but let me clarify, this is more than just Chamkila. It’s a journey from Chamkila to Sidhu Moosewala and beyond. That’s the essence of our show.

Remarkably, Jugraj, who has experience in both the Hindi and Punjabi film industries, discussed his personal encounters with threatening phone calls. He explained, “I have received extortion calls on my own phone, and once on a family member’s phone. I was quite surprised to learn how they managed to get that number.

The filmmaker casually disclosed that some well-known actors among his friends have received threatening phone calls for ransom. He pointed out that it’s quite obvious who these individuals are, considering they are the most prominent figures in the nation’s entertainment industry. Intriguingly, he also shared anecdotes about certain singers being unable to attend their performances due to obstructions on the road leading to their venues.

As he put it, singers and musicians are prevented from traveling outside their homes or to performance venues due to restrictions. He noted that most of these artists are non-national residents. To elaborate, he stressed that the land they perform on is theirs, and nobody has the power to force them out.

He lamented that those individuals are no longer citizens due to their apprehensions about their loved ones. In essence, a person is more afraid for their family than themselves. As a result, most of their relatives and many families have moved elsewhere. He made this observation in closing remarks.

Chamak-The Conclusion will start streaming on SonyLiv from April 4, 2025.
