Channing Tatum Opens Up On The Origins Of His Gambit Accent And The Night Before Christmas Was Not What I Expected

As a seasoned gamer and avid comic book fan who grew up in the deep south, I can wholeheartedly say that Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit in Deadpool 3 was a long-awaited delight! Having followed his attempts to bring the card-slinging mutant to life for over two decades, I felt a strange sense of nostalgia and relief as he finally donned the red bandanna.

Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for regularly unveiling fresh content, whether it’s in cinemas or through a Disney+ subscription. The most recent addition to this universe is Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which shattered box office records and has rapidly become a beloved title among fans. This film boasted numerous unexpected appearances, with Channing Tatum portraying Gambit. Lately, Tatum, who you might recognize from “Magic Mike,” has shared insights on the origin of his Gambit accent, which turned out to be quite different from my expectations of “The Night Before Christmas.”

The cast lineup for Deadpool 3 sparked much discussion before its premiere, with several anticipated cameos that ultimately didn’t happen. However, Channing Tatum managed to portray Gambit, a role he was announced for in a solo movie that ended up stuck in production limbo due to Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox. His accent in the film became a recurring joke, although it drew some mixed reactions online. During his interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tatum expressed his fondness for the X-Man, stating:

1. I might tear up. I might genuinely feel strong emotions. For nearly two decades, I’ve strived to portray that specific character within the industry.

Discuss a lengthy reward: The Gambit film unfortunately didn’t materialize, despite Channing Tatum’s persistent efforts to play the card-flinging mutant character. However, even though his part in Deadpool 3 might seem minor, it appears to have been an emotionally challenging journey for the actor from The Hateful Eight.

In Deadpool 3, Tatum’s accent was exaggerated for comedic effect, with Wade Wilson making fun of it and even mentioning a dialect coach. However, Tatum has connections to Cajun culture, as he grew up in Mississippi, which he discussed with Fallon. Notably, he offered a distinct interpretation of the classic poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” or “The Night Before Christmas.”

In other words, my dad is originally from New Orleans, but I grew up in Mississippi, immersed in the broader Bayou region. Interestingly, many Cajun people aren’t found in New Orleans; they reside more in Lafayette and similar areas. However, the Cajun culture and sound have a significant influence across that region. We used to enjoy reading a book titled ‘The Cajun Night Before Christmas’, often finding amusement in our interpretations of it.

In the movies Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum played his character with an over-the-top accent for comedic effect. However, it appears that he has a good understanding of the intricacies of the cajun dialect associated with Gambit. If given the chance to create a full Gambit movie, one can speculate how he might have utilized this knowledge and accent in his portrayal of the character.

Still, he looked awesome in Deadpool 3, and got to do some really cool battle sequences with Gambit’s cards. Some fans are hoping to see him back in the role for an upcoming Marvel movie, while others are happy with what we got in the Ryan Reynolds movie.
