Chappell Roan Recalls ‘The Voice’ Audition Where Producer “Did Not Even Look Up From His Phone”

Chappell Roan is making a name for herself with a Grammy win, an impressive Lollapalooza performance, and maintaining her boundaries as a rising talent. Yet, among the challenges she’s faced, auditioning for ‘The Voice’ stands out as particularly daunting to her.

In an interview with W Magazine, the singer from “The Giver” discussed her journey as an aspiring artist prior to achieving fame last year. She disclosed that she attempted to participate in reality TV competitions like The Voice and America’s Got Talent (her auditions were not broadcasted). She also mentioned that her audition for The Voice, in particular, was less successful because a producer didn’t seem very interested in her performance.

During my tryout for ‘The Voice’, I was only 15 years old,” the Grammy recipient explained. “Interestingly, when I performed at the ‘Voice’ audition, the person overseeing it didn’t even bother to look up from their phone.

At her audition, the recent Grammy winner for Best New Artist performed an a cappella version of Rihanna’s “Stay”. She admitted it was the most terrifying experience. Furthermore, she mentioned that he didn’t seem to pay much attention to her during the performance.

In a conversation on “Call Her Daddy” in March, Roan expressed her contentment about not getting chosen for the show. She stated, “Apparently, I wasn’t part of the show.” And she added gratefully, “I’m glad about that!

Regarding America’s Got Talent, Roan shared her experience of traveling to Austin, Texas when she was thirteen for the auditions. Unfortunately, the outcome wasn’t favorable. “We stood in line with thousands of people at 4 a.m,” she explained. “I sang ‘True Colors,’ by Cyndi Lauper, but I didn’t get selected either.

Roan experienced prosperity in her career last year when she joined Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS tour as an opener and has since achieved significant milestones. She made history at Lollapalooza with a standout daytime set, received six Grammy nominations, and won the award for best new artist. As a star in her own right, she’s been vocal about advocating for change within the industry using her platform.
