As a dedicated sneakerhead who’s been around the block more times than I care to count, I must say that the fragment design x Air Jordan 3 collaboration has always been a standout for me. The unique touch of Hiroshi Fujiwara and Jordan Brand never fails to impress, and each new iteration only adds to the excitement.
The 2020 black and white version of this collaborative masterpiece is yet another testament to their exceptional design prowess. I’ve seen a lot of sneakers in my time, but the yellowing heel on the original pair was something truly special that left an indelible mark on the sneaker community.
While it’s always bittersweet when a beautiful sample remains just that – a sample – I can’t help but appreciate the artistry that goes into creating these one-of-a-kind designs. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll see this black and white beauty grace our feet!
On a lighter note, I guess you could say that this sneaker is like a chameleon – it changes its colors but never loses its charm! It’s like the old saying goes: “Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they go and flip the color scheme!
2025 will mark five years since Hiroshi Fujiwara’s fragment design joined forces with Jordan Brand to launch a collaborative version of the Air Jordan 3. This partnership, characterized by a predominantly white upper with black accents on the mudguard, featured fragment design’s lightning bolt logo at the back of both shoes and the heel, which gained notoriety for its yellowish discoloration caused by oxidation. Interestingly, only one pair was actually released, but other designs conceived by the duo include this 2020 pair, which reversed the color scheme of the retail version.
Prior to the 2020 model being previewed, Fujiwara unveiled a blue, white, and black colorway in 2019, followed by an all-gray version of the shoe. In addition to the previously unreleased AJ3s from the duo, we now have a detailed look at a black and white version of the 2020 pair. This reverse arrangement is quite distinct in its changes – instead of a white leather upper, it sports a black one, and the mudguard has been switched from black to white. The shoe’s most striking feature is the heel – the transparent heel tab with layered branding has been replaced by the traditional Nike Air branding on a black tab.
After five years since their formation, it’s doubtful that this partnership will end up on store shelves. But keep an eye out for future projects from Fragment Design x Jordan Brand, as they are anticipated to make a significant impact on the Air Jordan 1’s 40th anniversary festivities.
