As a fan who grew up singing along to ABBA tunes and dancing around my living room, the possibility of a third “Mamma Mia” movie is nothing short of exhilarating! For six decades, Cher has been an unstoppable force of nature, and her return as the beloved Ruby Sheridan would make this trilogy even more magical.
The triple threat that is Cher has been unstoppable for six decades, and counting. She’s endlessly talented and fun to watch whether it’s through her ever-evolving music career or catching her in her best movie and television roles. Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again wouldn’t have been the same without her even though she only had a few scenes. The thought of a threequel with more Cher time would be great, and it seems like it’s a possibility, according to the memoirist.
Actress Cher recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her latest book, “Cher: The Memoir, Part One”, and hinted at exciting news regarding the third installment of the hit musical-turned-movie, “Mamma Mia”. She expressed a strong desire to return as Ruby Sheridan, the mother of Donna (played by Meryl Streep/Lily James) and grandmother to Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), in the upcoming sequel. In her own words:
We’re discussing the topic. I’m unsure of the timeline, but I can confirm that they are having discussions about it.
Confirming the suggestion made by Judy Craymer, the mastermind behind the musical and films, last year, Cher is indeed reinforcing the idea. Like countless other fans, I am more than eager to see “Mamma Mia” evolve into a trilogy and fully support Craymer’s pursuit of a third installment.
The actress who starred in “Moonstruck” expressed that she’s still advocating for Meryl Streep’s reprisal as Donna. Despite the fact that Donna, portrayed by Streep, was written out in the sequel, I have a feeling we might see the actress from “Julie & Julia” dancing with her former co-stars in the coming days. Cher expressed her enthusiasm for bringing back Streep by saying:
I’ve been telling Meryl, “You really should return. It would be enjoyable, and there’s an opportunity for singing.
I’m not holding my breath or anything but even the It’s Complicated star has spoken about how she’d be into signing on to the third installment, if possible. She’s even shared some theories of how her matriarchal role could return to the ABBA musical. The commitment to the series is there, and if any two stars could pull something as wild as this off, it’d be Streep and Cher. The reality of it probably boils down to the Only Murders in the Building cast member’s scheduling, especially now with the announced sequel to another Streep classic, The Devil Wears Prada.
When the third installment of the series officially premieres, only time will reveal the outcome, but other actors have nothing but praise for it so far. Stellan Skarsgård, who portrays Bill, the love interest, initially found the concept preposterous, but he ended up having a great time working with his co-stars. Saoirse Ronan, who plays Sophie, shared that she’s always been an ABBA fan and it’s a favorite among her family; she even spoke about her aspirations for her character in future episodes.
It’s great if Cher or any members of the cast keep providing thrilling and anticipatory news about the upcoming chapters of Hotel Villa Donna, a place that we, along with numerous enthusiasts, eagerly await. Fingers crossed that Meryl Streep is among them for the sequel!
To catch the movie “Mamma Mia!”, you’ll need a Max Subscription. For its sequel, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” you’ll require a Peacock subscription instead.
