As a gamer who has grown up listening to Linkin Park, this recent turn of events leaves me feeling like I’ve just lost my favorite controller at a LAN party – unexpected, disheartening, and slightly infuriating. Chester Bennington’s son, Jaime, expressing his frustration over the band’s decision to bring on Emily Armstrong as a co-vocalist is not only understandable but also reflects the sentiments of many longtime fans who have felt betrayed by this move.
Jaime Bennington, Chester Bennington’s son, voiced his criticism openly on social media in response to the announcement of Linkin Park’s new shared vocalist, Emily Armstrong.
Jamie voiced criticism towards Mike Shinoda for employing Armstrong, who has been linked to Scientology and penned a letter in support of Danny Masterson – an actor famously known as Hyde in That ’70s Show. Masterson was recently found guilty of rape. Jamie expressed his concern on Instagram Stories, stating that Shinoda hasn’t acknowledged the potential consequences of hiring someone like Emily, and hasn’t provided a clear explanation to his audience, many of whom are victims themselves.
He continued, “You quietly erase[d] my father’s life and legacy in real time not only during a band interview meant to clear the air about certain aspects of Linkin Park’s history and future during international suicide prevention month.”
Jaime stated, “You broke the trust that had been given to you over decades by fans and well-wishers, including myself. We believed in you to rise above, to improve, and to bring about change because you had pledged that was your aim. Now it seems you’re simply out of touch and insensitive.
Neither Shinoda nor the other members of Linkin Park have responded.
Last week, Armstrong addressed the initial public criticism on Instagram with a statement that read, “A few years ago, I was asked to accompany someone I considered a friend to a court hearing and attended an initial session as an observer. Shortly afterwards, I came to understand that I had made a mistake. Since then, I’ve never spoken to him again.” She further clarified, “Let me be absolutely clear: I do not support or condone abuse or violence against women, and I stand in solidarity with those who have suffered from such crimes.
