As a seasoned movie enthusiast with decades of watching and analyzing films under my belt, I must say that Chevy Chase is a conundrum that has left many directors scratching their heads in frustration. Having followed the ups and downs of his career from the early days of Saturday Night Live to his latest roles, I’ve come to the conclusion that working with him would be like playing a high-stakes game of Russian roulette – you never know when the hammer will fall.
In my humble opinion, Chevy Chase is a comedy genius whose talent cannot be denied, but his volatile personality and abrasive attitude make him a difficult collaborator at best. I’ve seen directors like Jason Reitman try to navigate the treacherous waters of working with him, only to end up on the receiving end of a brutal critique that feels like a punch in the gut.
It’s no secret that Chase has a reputation for being difficult and egocentric, but I believe it’s important to remember that behind the bravado lies a complex individual with a rich history in comedy. Perhaps one day, we’ll see a documentary or biopic that delves into the real Chevy Chase, the man beneath the legend. And if it ever does happen, I hope they include a scene where he says something like:
“So, the director comes up to me after and he goes, ‘Chevy, you were amazing in the film!’ To which I replied, ‘Well, you should be embarrassed for even asking.’ Because, let’s face it, who am I but Chevy Chase?
In a candid moment, director Jason Reitman, who helmed this year’s semi-autobiographical film titled “Saturday Night”, shared an unconventional praise he received from one of the characters portrayed in the movie – none other than the notoriously challenging actor to work with in Hollywood, Chevy Chase himself.
Although Chase wasn’t part of the film’s creation process, he still ended up watching it since Chase is a major character within the movie. The movie titled “Saturday Night” depicts the storyline leading to the first live comedy show broadcast, famously known as “Saturday Night Live”. Besides Lorne Michaels, other real-life comedians that appear in the film are Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Billy Crystal, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, and Andy Kaufman.
Reitman appeared as a guest on the podcast “Fly on the Wall,” known for hosting SNL veterans David Spade and Dana Carvey. During the discussion, he disclosed what Chase had shared with him following the movie’s screening.
As a film enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that encounters with moviegoers can often be quite memorable. One such instance that stands out in my memory is when Chevy, accompanied by his wife Jayni, came to watch a movie at our theater. After the film, as the audience dispersed, Chevy approached me and, with a familiar smile, gave me a pat on the shoulder. “Well,” he said, “you should be embarrassed.”
At first, I was taken aback by his comment. But upon reflection, I realized that it was not meant to be harsh or critical, but rather an expression of constructive criticism from someone with extensive knowledge in the industry. It served as a reminder that, despite my passion for films, there is always room for improvement and growth. This encounter with Chevy remains one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in my career as a film critic.
Carvey and Spade attempted to explain to Reitman that Chase’s harsh response might be merely a part of his character, possibly without any malicious intent. As put by Carvey: “[Chevy] finds it amusing, like it’s the most brutal thing one could say to a director in that moment or very close to it.” Spade simply called it a typical move from Chase.
I believe I might be on the right track when attempting to decipher the intriguing enigma that is Chase’s unique character. Given that comedians likely crossed paths with him frequently in Studio 8, they may have had similar experiences or backgrounds with him. However, it seems he often comes across as annoying and immature. Upon receiving criticism from the SNL legend, I can recall the feelings of discomfort and apprehension that washed over me.
I’m trying to find the right balance since I feel like this situation is giving me a unique Chevy Chase moment that’s entirely mine at the moment. From a comedic perspective, it’s quite authentic and rather intriguing.
However, it’s disheartening to note that despite investing around two years of my time to authentically portray Chevy, focusing on both his unique qualities and the human side, creating a moment for audience connection – unfortunately, none of this seemed to resonate. He didn’t discuss those aspects.
You Probably Wouldn’t Want to Work with Chevy Chase
Reitman brings this point up, and we’re echoing it. Chevy Chase seems deeply preoccupied with his ego, and while everyone is entitled to their thoughts, the comedian must recognize that he’s caused pain with his erratic behavior. Fortunately, the entertainment industry as a whole has chosen to challenge Chase on this issue.
Chase faced a ban from Saturday Night Live following an occurrence that made his previous friend, Lorne Michaels, reject the actor from ever entering Studio 8 again. His departure from Community was evidently due to his conduct towards other actors, and most recently, Chris Columbus, director of Home Alone, stated that Chase was responsible for him not directing Christmas Vacation. Thus, it appears that Reitman was another casualty of the Chase-storm, the destructive actions by a once revered comedy figure who doesn’t appreciate being honored.
