In response to criticism from Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant about the depiction of a dance sequence involving Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna, and Akshaye Khanna in the movie “Chhaava” related to Sambhaji Maharaj, director Laxman Utekar recently met MNS chief Raj Thackeray and confirmed that the scene will be removed from the film.
On January 27, following his conversation with MNS chief Raj Thackeray, director Laxman Utekar clarified to the press that the movie will exclude a scene where Vicky Kaushal’s character Sambhaji Maharaj and his on-screen wife, portrayed by Rashmika Mandanna, would dance the Lezim together.
A public announcement was made alongside this, and the filmmaker clarified that the controversy revolves around a dancing scene and not overshadowing the greatness of the Maratha King. He mentioned that Raj Thackeray, known for his passion for reading and academic pursuits, was someone he recently interacted with.
The director stated that he’s incorporated some advice and direction from a specific individual. He finds this guidance extremely beneficial for his work. Following their meeting, he has chosen to omit the scenes depicting Sambhaji Maharaj performing Lezim dance.
Regarding Sambhaji Maharaj, he is significantly more substantial than the Lezim dance. Therefore, we plan to exclude any related scenes in the movie,” he stated.
Apart from this, he also discussed with IANS and disclosed that Raj Thackeray has shown interest in the movie’s trailer as well. Utkar stated that this prominent politician shares the same level of ‘enthusiasm’ for the period-drama. Additionally, he expressed his appreciation for the insightful comment he provided, hinting at its validity and recommending the omission of the dance scene.

For those unfamiliar, Lezim Dance is a traditional dance from Maharashtra that involves dancing with a small musical instrument called Lezim, which has cymbals that tinkle. As Utekar observed during filming, he didn’t see anything problematic in the scene because, considering Sambhaji Maharaj as a respected leader among his people, it was likely that he would have joined his followers in their celebration and danced with them too.
Under the leadership of Vicky Kaushal, Akshaye Khanna, and Rashmika Mandanna, the film Chhaava boasts an impressive cast that includes Ashutosh Rana, Diana Penty, and Divya Dutta in pivotal roles, among others. Slated for release on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025, this production by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films is eagerly anticipated.
