Chicago Bulls To Retire Derrick Rose’s No. 1 Jersey

The Chicago Bulls announced that it is set to retire Derrick Rose’s No. 1 jersey next season.

In the history of the Chicago Bulls, Derrick Rose will become the fifth player to have his jersey number retired, following Jerry Sloan (No. 4), Bob Love (No. 10), Michael Jordan (No. 23), and Scottie Pippen (No. 33). Rose, who officially left the NBA in September 2024, expressed that having his jersey hanging from the rafters would help cement his status within the league. He stated, “That would be my way of getting close to the top 75, and I’m only saying that because it relates to the MVP,” as he spoke via ESPN.

Rose commented, “A mere few were awarded that trophy; it’s surprising that the Chicago style of play wasn’t among the top 75. It certainly makes one ponder about it or wonder if something might be amiss.

As a devoted fan looking back, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey of the player who was selected first in the 2008 NBA Draft at the age of 36. For eight seasons, I cheered him on as he donned the Bulls’ jersey before being traded to the New York Knicks in 2016. Subsequently, his career took him to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and ultimately, the Memphis Grizzlies. With each team change, my admiration for his resilience only grew stronger, until he finally decided to hang up his jersey and retire from the game.

At just 22 years and six months old, Rose was crowned the youngest MVP in NBA history. Additionally, he claimed the title of Rookie of the Year and made it to the NBA All-Star team three times. His career statistics include a total of 12,573 points and 3,770 assists in 723 games over a span of 15 seasons.
