As a seasoned gamer of the Chicago Fire universe, I must say that this latest episode, “A Monster in the Field,” has truly tested my emotional resilience. The firehouse is in a state of flux, and it’s akin to being thrown into a blazing inferno without a trusty hose.

At Firehouse 51, there’s a noticeable change as the new Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) takes over from the departed Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker). The rigid and rule-bound approach of Chief Pascal conflicts sharply with the crew’s established norms. This inflexibility creates chaos, particularly for Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), as Pascal disapproves of them working together due to their marital status. Severide receives a stern warning from Pascal, who also expresses concern over Severide’s unexpected interest in Jack Damon (Michael Bradway). Only Stella, Jack, and Kelly know that Jack is Kelly’s half-brother, a fact revealed in the Season 12 finale.
I can surely understand why Stella confides in her husband during a quiet moment in the storyline that she’s not emotionally prepared to embark on parenthood just yet. In fact, you could say that conversation between Stella and Kelly during the Season 12 finale about starting a family was decisively negative. She confessed that when she’s engaged with children, her anxiety levels spike significantly. Despite hoping she had grown ready for this step, it appears they are not yet at the point where having a baby is appropriate for them.
Kelly accepts the news with composure, considering that his wife is likewise dealing with scrutiny over her Girls on Fire charity. Under such circumstances, it’s only fitting for him to show understanding. However, it’s not just them; others are also grappling with personal issues as Season 13 unfolds.
Romantic ups and downs decorate A Monster in the Field
As Kelly faces intense review from both Pascal, due to his actions protecting his half-brother on duty, and Stella concerning their marriage, the firehouse itself grapples with its own internal struggles.
It is primarily Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) who is going through a tough time, as her relationship with Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) has ended and it seems he’s moved on while vacationing in Texas. Although she yearns for reconciliation, he seemingly has started dating someone new. Violet attempts to discuss the issue with him, but he ends their relationship in a cold and final manner. Meanwhile, Dom Pascal is grappling with his own marital problems as his wife, Monica (KaDee Strickland), denies him access to their newly shared home. She criticizes him for being too work-oriented, yet eventually agrees to give him another chance.
In a potentially romantic development, characters Jack and Lyla Novak (played by Jocelyn Hudon) seem to be growing closer together, with Jack inviting her out on a date. We’ll have to wait and see if they form an iconic duo like Stellaride, as the 13th season of “Chicago Fire” unfolds further.
