As a die-hard fan of Chicago Fire, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns over the seasons. But the latest episode, “Through the Skin,” was a rollercoaster ride that left me on the edge of my seat! The drama between Stella Kidd and Dominic Pascal, the tension between Kelly Severide and Jack Damon, and Joe Cruz’s bicycle chase were just some of the highlights.
Contains spoilers for “Chicago Fire” Season 13, Episode 4 — “Through the Skin”
In the story “Through the Skin,” Violet Mikami, portrayed by Hanako Greensmith, faces the brink of losing her medical license following an unconventional C-section on a deceased patient to save the life of her daughter, resulting in quite a shocking One Chicago crossover event. At the same time, Kelly Severide, played by Taylor Kinney, grapples with his half-brother Jack Damon (Michael Bradway) refusing to communicate with him after Damon’s transfer to another firehouse due to tensions between Damon and Kelly’s wife Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). Lastly, Joe Cruz searches high and low throughout Chicago in an attempt to locate the individual who swiped his son Javi’s bicycle for resale online.
More crucially, Stella and Dominic Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) face the challenge of adjusting the crew list for Stella’s fire truck, Truck 81. After Damon’s departure, reorganizing everything appears almost impossible without a simple solution. Yet, Stella finds a way to bring in a new team member and unexpectedly gains Pascal’s admiration. However, this change brings about some adjustments in the crew. Who will be assigned to Truck 81 when the situation stabilizes?
Kylie Estevez
In the beginning, Stella speaks to Kylie Estevez (formerly known as Katelynn Shennett) about the position at hand. For quite some time, Kylie has been the station’s main contact, but her aspiration has always been to become a firefighter herself. During Season 11, she teamed up with Stella in her “Girls on Fire” program for training. Following this, she successfully passed both written and physical tests and enrolled at the fire academy. In Episode 20 of the series, titled “Never, Ever Make a Mistake,” Kylie earns her diploma and transitions into being a firefighter.
To Stella’s astonishment, Kylie declines to hop on Stella’s motorbike, explaining that if she joins Truck 81, she might not be able to establish a unique identity distinct from Stella in her new position. Disheartened, Stella can’t think of an alternative and has a heated argument with Pascal about it. Luckily, someone else offers what appears to be the ideal solution to their predicament.
Darren Ritter
Chris Herrmann (David Eigenberg) proposes that Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyrie) relocate to Fire Truck 81. This seems like an ideal arrangement as Ritter has been thriving there and may have the opportunity to establish a unique identity without interference from the rig. For Ritter, this move represents a promotion and a chance to distinguish himself among his fellow firefighters.
Ritter is quite enthusiastic about the transfer. In fact, during Randy “Mouch” McHolland’s absence last season, he had taken over for him and found a new place where he made friends. He works well under Stella’s leadership and even flourishes in her command, which makes him more suitable for the truck than Damon. However, Herrmann doesn’t limit his advice to just this suggestion; Stella listens carefully to all of his recommendations and acts upon them.
Christopher Herrmann
At Molly’s, Chris Herrmann proposes a plan to Stella where Ritter joins 81, opening up a position on Engine 51 for Kylie. By doing so, Kylie would no longer be tied down as a floater, but instead, she could use her skills freely while maintaining her independence. Delighted by this proposition, Kylie accepts the new role offered to her.
In another demonstration of leadership potential, Herrmann continues to take strategic steps towards becoming a leader, even though he has been overshadowed by Dom for now. However, given his exceptional problem-solving abilities, it’s only a matter of time before Herrmann takes his seat as chief. For now, Stella must handle Pascal and the larger situation at hand.
Where this leaves Pascal and Stella’s working relationship
Looking back, it appears that the situation between Stella and Pascal has finally stabilized, thanks to a mutual respect that’s blossomed once their business dealings are concluded. Frankly, their professional relationship had been rocky since Pascal joined the scene, with him doubting Stella’s leadership abilities and her being cautious about his firm management style. Pascal even went as far as suggesting that Stella and Kelly’s marriage could be a potential issue, hinting at the possibility of causing trouble – considering they both work at the same firehouse, which isn’t exactly common for spouses.
However, as he endeavored to reconcile with a rival over his wife Violet and secured a powerful witness for her court case, as well as showing openness to Stella’s suggestions regarding Truck 81, Pascal has started to make amends. Whether this change in behavior will endure remains to be seen.
