Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 12 Gives Hannah Asher A Redemption Arc

Contains spoilers for “Chicago Med” Season 10, Episode 12 — “In The Wake”

Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) has experienced a tough, tumultuous Season 10, marked by losing a patient during an emergency C-section, surviving a citywide disaster after a building explosion and tunnel collapse, and navigating her complex relationship with Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell), which has had its highs and lows. However, in Episode 12 titled “In The Wake,” Hannah starts to see some positive changes and even scores a few victories, albeit limited ones. In other aspects, she faces strong resistance and unluckily foreshadows unfavorable events.

In a professional sense, things are progressing positively for the doctor, but personally, his relationship with Mitch has encountered another obstacle. Here, we explore the highs and lows Hannah experiences throughout “In the Wake,” which could potentially prompt her to end her relationship with Mitch after months of disagreements and accusations.

Hannah succeeds as a doctor

In Episode 3 of Season 10, titled “Trust Fall,” viewers witnessed Hannah grappling with the aftermath of a failed emergency C-section that resulted in the loss of patient Elise (played by Ito Aghayere). Heartbreakingly, Elise had placed her trust in Hannah following numerous unfavorable encounters with white medical professionals. Tragically, Elise suffered severe internal bleeding during surgery, though the baby was successfully delivered. For the subsequent eight episodes, Hannah has been wrestling with feelings of guilt and self-recrimination over this incident.

In “In the Wake,” Hannah ultimately has the opportunity to clear her past mistakes when an emergency C-section is required for another woman. Remarkably, Hannah manages to complete the operation successfully, and both mother and child exit the situation unscathed. Given all that she’s previously endured, this outcome serves as a miraculous turn of events and provides a redemptive moment amidst an otherwise somber episode. Now, Hannah can carry on with her surgical duties without the heavy burden of her past cast over her.

But she had to also confront her alcoholism

On a personal level, Hannah attempts to provide comfort for Mitch as he grapples with the loss of his childhood friend, Sully, from cancer. However, his grieving process manifests as heavy drinking with companions, an activity Hannah cannot join due to clear reasons.

In the fifth season, Hannah was introduced as a former drug addict who had overcome heroin and alcohol addiction. A harmful relationship with Dr. Will Halstead (played by Nick Gehlfuss) triggered another round of substance abuse for her. To regain control over her life, she left. Later in Season 7, Hannah returned to “Chicago Med” as a reformed individual, now free from both drugs and alcohol. She has maintained her sobriety since then. Whether her past experiences have made her a better doctor is open to debate, but they do influence some of her professional relationships.

The reason things between Ripley and “In the Wake” become so tense is because it’s evident that such a night isn’t one she can enjoy, despite her accepting his apology for the binge, passionately kissing him, and offering to stay on the couch with him. However, he still chooses to go out drinking with friends instead. Based on hints from Episode 13 previews, this decision might have significant consequences for Ripley later on.

Ripley may pay the price for his own drinking

In Season 10, Mitch Ripley has experienced a difficult run, largely due to his struggle against unfounded assault accusations from a patient. However, it appears that genuine assault charges could be looming after the events of “In the Wake.” Following an argument with Hannah about his alcohol consumption, his visit to the bar ends disastrously. Ripley collides with another man, leading to a disagreement, and by the end, he’s viciously attacking the individual.

According to previews for Episode 13 titled “Take a Look in the Mirror” airing on February 19, it appears that Ripley’s victim is brought into the emergency room on a gurney. This is undoubtedly troublesome news for both Ripley and the man he assaulted. We’ll see if Mitch makes the right choice, whether the man recovers, how Mitch and Hannah’s relationship fares given their apparent unsuitability at this juncture, and if Hannah can keep moving forward on her journey towards self-improvement.
