Chicago Med's Season 10 Episode Count Has Been Confirmed, But One Detail Bums Me Out All Over Again About Season 9

As an avid fan of the One Chicago block, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment as I learn that Chicago Med will fall just short of reaching a significant milestone in its upcoming tenth season. With Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. both having achieved 200 episodes each in their respective tenth seasons, it would have been an exciting accomplishment for Med to join them. However, the impact of the WGA writers strike during the previous season left us with only thirteen episodes, which means that Med will end Season 10 with a mere 198 episodes under its belt.

As a long-time fan of NBC’s One Chicago block, I am thrilled to hear that “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” and “Chicago Med” are coming back for new seasons in just a few months. Each show has become an integral part of my weekly TV routine, and I have grown attached to the characters and storylines over the years.

In the upcoming 2024-2025 TV season, each of the three One Chicago shows – Fire, P.D., and Med – will air 22 episodes, as reported by TVLine. This is typical for network dramas. However, due to the WGA writers strike in 2023, which coincided with the SAG-AFTRA actors strike, these shows saw a reduction in episodes, resulting in seasons of only 13 episodes for Fire, P.D., and Med. Sadly, this means that Medical will fall short of reaching a significant milestone in Season 10.

Up until the suspenseful finale of Season 9, which featured a major cliffhanger involving Ripley, Chicago Med has broadcasted a total of 176 episodes. With the upcoming 22 episodes scheduled for Season 10, this medical drama is on track to approach the significant 200-episode mark that both Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D. achieved during their tenth seasons. Assuming no unforeseen issues or significant declines in viewership, I am optimistic that One Chicago will carry on through the 2025-2026 season, pushing Med past the 200-episode milestone. It would have been more satisfying for the show to reach this milestone in Season 10, aligning with the other two series.

With Season 10 approaching and its standard 22-episode count, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that Season 9 didn’t last for a few more episodes. I understand it’s not rational of me to think so, as fans were grateful for the thirteen episodes we received following the lengthy negotiations between the AMPTP, WGA, and SAG-AFTRA. A complete tenth season is indeed exciting news. Yet, wrapping up Season 10 at Episode 200 instead of Episode 198 might have added some fun twists.

In simple terms, neither “Chicago Fire” nor “Chicago P.D.” will reach any significant achievements during the next season. “Chicago Fire” had an action-packed Episode 250 featuring Severide in May that resembled the “Die Hard” movie. Meanwhile, “Chicago P.D.” will fall short of reaching 250 episodes after the conclusion of Season 12.

As a long-time fan of “Chicago Med,” I must admit that the news about Dominic Rains leaving the show was disheartening. His character, Crockett Marcel, added depth and complexity to the medical drama. However, none of this is to say that we should be pessimistic about what the fall has in store for One Chicago.

On Wednesdays starting September 25, at 8 p.m. ET, NBC airs the Season 10 debut of “Chicago Med.” At 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET, respectively, come “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” For an early fix of the One Chicago series, consider subscribing to Peacock Premium for streaming access.
