Chicago P.D. Adds New Boss For Season 12, And I Need To See Voight's Reaction After How Upton Left

As a long-time fan of Chicago P.D., I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming twelfth season! The addition of Shawn Hatosy as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid promises to bring a fresh dynamic to the Intelligence Unit, and I’m eagerly anticipating the complex relationship between him and Jason Beghe’s character, Voight.

As the number of weeks dwindles until “Chicago P.D.” comes back in the 2024 TV lineup alongside “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago Med”, I’m eager to discover what transpires. Since it was announced during summer that Toya Turner, a former cast member from One Chicago, will join the Intelligence Unit replacing Tracy Spiridakos as Hailey Upton, the police drama has introduced a new deputy chief with an intriguing background. Overall, I can’t wait to find out how Voight reacts to this newcomer when Season 12 premieres and learn more about why and how Upton departed.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share the exciting news that Shawn Hatosy, known for his roles in ‘Animal Kingdom’ and ‘Southland’, will be rejoining the cast of ‘Chicago P.D.’ during its upcoming twelfth season! Showrunner Gwen Sigan revealed this intriguing development, describing Deputy Chief Charlie Reid as an “exciting character” who brings a “new dynamic” to the team. This addition promises to inject fresh energy into the unit, making me even more eager for the new season!

It appears he strongly resonates with Voight’s character and shares many similarities, even adopting his perspective as a police officer. Their bond is intriguing and promises to develop further throughout the season.

Previously, an issue in the Intelligence Unit arose due to numerous individuals finding themselves mirroring Jason Beghe’s character. This potentially contributed to decisions like Upton and Halstead leaving their jobs, as they felt overwhelmed by the time commitment. The brief appearance of Elias Koteas in the Season 11 finale served as a stark reminder of the potential perils that can befall characters ensnared in Voight’s complex web of affairs. So, what implications might a character who emulates Jason Beghe’s persona hold for the team?

Indeed, it’s intriguing to ponder how Voight might respond when confronted by someone superior who shares his ideology. His actions and their potential impact could be significantly influenced by his interpretation of Upton’s departure and the way the team functions in her absence.

Alongside Shawn Hatosy as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, the cast of Chicago P.D. includes Toya Turner, known for her role in Warrior Nun, who has been brought on board as Officer Kiana Cook. It appears that Cook might fill the vacancy within the Intelligence Unit. At present, it’s unclear whether any team members will be promoted to detective, but I’m hoping for Atwater to advance in Season 12.

It is yet unclear if Hatosy’s character will outlast some of his predecessors in terms of longevity, given that he is the one now leading Voight’s team. Previous characters like First Deputy Superintendent Brennan (played by Anne Heche, who unfortunately passed away) attempted suicide after being exposed as a corrupt officer in Season 7, while Samantha Miller (portrayed by Nicole Ari Parker from Empire) lost her son. Chief Patrick O’Neal (played by Michael Gaston), on the other hand, tried to kill his serial killer son before turning the gun on himself. At the very least, it seems unlikely that Reid’s storyline will be as intense and tragic as O’Neal’s was!

Luckily, the anticipation for Chicago P.D.’s Season 12 is almost over! Beginning Wednesday, September 25th on NBC, all three One Chicago series will air consecutively: first, Chicago Med at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, then Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET, and lastly, Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET. Until then, you can catch up on previous seasons by subscribing to Peacock Premium for streaming access.
