Chicago P.D. Is Bringing Back A One Chicago Veteran As New Series Regular, But Not The One I Expected To Replace Upton

As a dedicated One Chicago fan who’s seen more episodes than I care to count, I must say I was taken aback by the latest casting news for Chicago P.D.’s Season 12. Toya Turner joining the cast as a series regular is indeed intriguing, but I had my heart set on seeing Jo Petrovic (Bojana Novakovic) take Upton’s place in the Intelligence Unit.

In the fall of 2024, Chicago will once again grace NBC’s Wednesday evenings, and for months, there’s been speculation about who would replace Upton in the Intelligence Unit on Chicago P.D., following Tracy Spiridakos’ departure in Season 11 finale. Now, fresh updates for Season 12 reveal that a new main cast member has joined the police drama, and it’s an intriguing choice as a familiar face from One Chicago returns… though not the person I anticipated.

Chicago P.D.’s Newest Series Regular

As a gamer speaking in my own words: I’m thrilled to share that I, Toya Turner, have been added as a regular cast member in Season 12 of Chicago P.D., and I can’t wait to join forces with the talented team including Jason Beghe, LaRoyce Hawkins, Marina Squerciati, Patrick John Flueger, Amy Morton, and Benjamin Levy Aguilar. In this new role, I’ll be playing a patrol officer named Yara Page who thrives on the thrill of the Chicago Police Department and isn’t afraid to dive headfirst into chaos. Given my affinity for adrenaline rushes, I believe I’m well-suited to handle the pressures of the Intelligence Unit. Can’t wait to see what this exciting new journey brings!

Fans of Chicago series might recall Toya Turner from brief appearances in Season 2 of both Chicago Fire and Chicago Med, but she wasn’t portraying Officer Page in either. Remarkably, actors often take on multiple characters in the Chicago series much like they do in Law & Order. I’m excited to see more of Toya Turner than her guest roles in Fire and Med, and I found her compelling as Gabrielle during the last two seasons of New Amsterdam.

Initially, upon learning about the new cast member for Chicago P.D.’s Season 12, my first feeling was astonishment, as I had envisioned someone else being chosen if they were going to introduce a fresh regular character.

Why I Expected More Of Jo Petrovic

In the second half of Season 11, actress Bojana Novakovic joined the Chicago P.D. cast on a recurring basis. Her character, Petrovic, is predominantly working alongside Detective Upton, hinting at a potential transition for Upton’s role in Season 12. Petrovic’s proficiency in Intelligence stems from her membership in CPD’s Special Victims Unit, and her background was fleshed out last season, suggesting a prolonged storyline. Moreover, since Intelligence is now devoid of detectives following Upton’s departure, Petrovic fits the bill as a new detective in the team.

Before hearing about Toya Turner’s news, I would have wagered that Novakovic would be a full-time member by fall 2024 instead of a newcomer. However, the arrival of the new patrol officer joining intelligence doesn’t necessarily mean that Detective Petrovic won’t return or make guest appearances in Season 12. At this point, we can only wait and see. As for the detective shortage, I’m hoping Atwater finally gets that promotion he deserves. Moreover, I’m looking forward to seeing Benjamin Levy Aguilar more often in Season 12 compared to Season 11 now that the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike are no longer concerns for production.

The twelfth season of the show “Chicago P.D.” starts airing on Wednesday, September 25 at 10:00 PM Eastern Time on NBC.
