The entertainment industry in Hollywood can be unpredictable, often discarding actors whose skills or image no longer align with its current requirements, swiftly replacing them with enthusiastic performers eager to step into their roles. Regrettably, this trend is particularly noticeable among child actors. Many young talents find that their careers are cut short before they truly get started, leading some former child stars to work in regular jobs as adults when acting opportunities dried up for them.
There seems to be a pattern where young actors are initially cast in movies or TV shows, but aren’t asked to return for sequels or subsequent seasons. Sometimes, this change even takes place during the course of a season itself. The common thread among these instances is that an actor leaves a role they were playing in a film or TV series. This could be due to termination, personal decision not to return, or some unforeseen event. In most cases, the vacated role was then taken over by another actor, while the original actors either disappeared from the screen after being replaced, or reappeared much later for brief appearances, often as cameos.
Jolean Wejbe – Big Love
As a devoted fan, I must admit that HBO’s “Big Love” boasted an impressively vast cast, given its focus on a polygamous family consisting of a man and his three wives, each with their unique set of offspring. This wasn’t just limited to the immediate family, as it also encompassed extended families, friends, and romantic interests of all the children. The complexity of these relationships made for an engaging watch, but it was so intricate that it sometimes felt like a challenge to keep everyone straight — to the point where I didn’t even notice one of the kids changed actors during the series’ five-season journey!
In the TV series “Big Love,” Tancy Henrickson is the youngest child born to Bill Henrickson, portrayed by Bill Paxton, and his legal wife Barb Henrickson, played by Jeanne Tripplehorn. Initially acted by Jolean Wejbe for two seasons, Bella Thorne stepped into the role from Season 3 onwards as the series progressed. The creators of the show, Will Scheffer, revealed that Wejbe was growing up faster than expected and appeared older than the character Teenie should be, necessitating a recast. Since leaving “Big Love,” Jolean Wejbe has not pursued acting further, opting for a different path in life.
Jeremy Gelbwaks – The Partridge Family
As a devoted fan, I’d say that while “The Monkees” started as a fictional band in a TV series, they eventually transformed into a genuine band touring for decades post the show’s end. On the flip side, The Partridge Family title characters didn’t enjoy quite the same level of luck. David Cassidy managed some solo success in music, but the majority of The Partridge Family cast members transitioned into acting roles that were more sporadic, with many of them focusing less on musical pursuits – unless they continued acting altogether, which wasn’t always the case.
Jeremy Gelbwaks, an actor from “The Partridge Family,” didn’t pursue acting after the show ended. Intriguingly, he hadn’t acted before the show either – his 25 episodes as Chris Partridge in the first season represent his only credited role. As recounted by Shirley Jones, who played matriarch Shirley, Gelbwaks seemed disinterested and challenging to work with, suggesting that acting wasn’t something he truly enjoyed or was passionate about. It appears that he auditioned for the show solely due to parental pressure, and it wasn’t a pursuit he sought out or cherished. Consequently, the role of Chris Partridge was taken over by Brian Forster starting from Season 2, who portrayed the character for the following three seasons. Since then, Gelbwaks has led a secluded life away from the limelight after his brief acting career.
Carrie Henn – Aliens
Few people realize that the sci-fi action classic “Aliens” faced difficulties during development for seven long years. The main cause of this delay was that its initial release didn’t generate significant success, leaving 20th Century Fox uncertain about greenlighting a sequel. However, James Cameron’s exceptional screenplay eventually convinced the studio to produce one of the greatest action films ever made.
If the movie “Aliens” hadn’t been produced, Carrie Henn, the child actress, wouldn’t have portrayed Rebecca “Newt” Jorden. Fans of the film know that Newt is one of the few characters who make it to the end and even reappears in a way for the sequel “Alien 3”, though not exactly as we remember her from “Aliens”. To be precise, Newt appears in “Alien 3” only as a deceased character undergoing an autopsy, but Henn was no longer available for this role because she had grown six years older since the release of “Aliens”, while “Alien 3” begins immediately after the events of “Aliens”.
For 34 years, Henn’s acting career consisted solely of her debut role in the film “Aliens”, though she later provided a voiceover for a character in the 2020 animated miniseries “Thunder Island”. This was merely a brief appearance as an unnamed character. More recently, Henn has been attending horror and sci-fi conventions and often reminisces about her experiences filming “Aliens.
Caitlin Sanchez – Dora the Explorer
As a gamer, I’ve noticed an interesting trend: child characters in animated shows are often voiced by adults, particularly women. This gives longevity to roles like Nancy Cartwright’s Bart Simpson, who’s been going strong for over 35 years! Yet, there are instances where real kids lend their voices to young characters, adding a touch of authenticity.
However, the trade-off is that these children can’t continue voicing the character as they grow up or simply lose interest in doing so. Take Dora the Explorer, for example; she had three different voice actors over the eight seasons of the original series because the kids grew out of the role or chose to move on.
Originally, Kathleen Herles provided the voice for Dora, but after four seasons, she stepped down to focus on her studies. However, she later returned not just to voice acting, but specifically to the Dora franchise, taking on the role of Dora’s mother in the 2024 reboot series “Dora.” Following her departure, Caitlin Sanchez took over as Dora, beating out approximately 600 other candidates for the prestigious role. However, after 35 episodes across a three-year run, Nickelodeon felt that Sanchez’s voice was becoming too mature for the character. At this point, Fátima Ptacek became the third actress to play Dora, seeing her through to the end of the original series and both seasons of the spin-off series “Dora and Friends: Into the City!
As a loyal fan, I found myself taking legal action against Nickelodeon due to their alleged underpayment in royalties for reruns of my shows and intentionally coercing me into signing an unjust contract. Currently, Dora is my latest on-screen credit.
Ben Hyland – The Strain
Notably, Guillermo del Toro made headlines when he ventured into television production with “The Strain,” a show co-created by Chuck Hogan, which they also authored, based on their shared novel. The series unfolded over four seasons on FX from 2014 to 2017, focusing on the aftermath of a plane crash that appeared to unleash a virus transforming humans into vampires. A key figure among the extensive cast was Zach Goodweather, the son of the main character, Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (played by Corey Stoll).
In Season 1, I, as Zach, was portrayed by Ben Hyland, who had graced our screens with his presence in “House of Cards,” “Blue Bloods,” and the film “Marley & Me.” However, as we moved towards Season 2, showrunner and executive producer Carlton Cuse announced that Max Charles would be stepping into my role moving forward. Cuse explained to Deadline that this change was due to certain story requirements further down the line. He also expressed regret at Ben’s departure, praising him for his talent and character, stating we will all miss him and thank him for his outstanding work. Some viewers interpreted this as a lack of talent on my part, suggesting I wouldn’t be able to handle the growing demands of Zach’s role in future seasons.
For fifteen years now, since Hyland left “The Strain”, there hasn’t been any new project added to his filmography.
Callum Wharry – Game of Thrones
After the conclusion of “Game of Thrones,” a number of actors have not appeared in any other roles. Some of these individuals didn’t even reach the final episode or the demise of their characters, suggesting they may have retired from acting altogether. One such actor is Callum Wharry, whose sole screen credit is his eight appearances as Tommen Baratheon during the first two seasons of the show.
In Season 3, actor Dean-Charles Chapman portrayed Martyn Lannister for just two episodes. However, starting from Season 4, he assumed the role of Tommen Baratheon, which he continued to play until Tommen’s demise in the final episode of Season 6. Since Martyn Lannister had already perished, there was no need for another actor to step into his shoes after Chapman switched roles. It remains unclear why Harrold McCoy (who played Martyn) was replaced by Chapman, but it’s speculated that the change was due to Tommen having more mature storylines and the character needing to appear older as the narrative progressed.
Tami Stronach – The NeverEnding Story
Forty years after Tami Stronach’s portrayal of The Childlike Empress in “The NeverEnding Story,” an entire generation can vividly recall her performance, largely due to her frequent direct gaze into the camera, as if speaking directly to the audience. However, when sequels started appearing and Stronach was no longer the actress for the role, it has left many wondering: whatever happened to The Childlike Empress from “The NeverEnding Story”?
In “The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter,” both Sebastian and Atreyu’s original actors were replaced, yet their initial stars remained active in acting for some time afterward. Interestingly, it was only Stronach who seemed to fade from the public eye after the first film, with Alexandra Johnes portraying her character in the second movie and Julie Cox taking over in the third. It is revealed that Stronach’s mother, concerned about the risks of becoming a prominent child star, refused to let her participate in subsequent “NeverEnding Story” films and effectively ended her career in the entertainment industry.
After an absence of 24 years, Stronach reappeared on screen with a miniseries broadcasted in the Czech Republic in 2008. Since then, she has shown signs of resuming her acting career occasionally, appearing in just two minor films during the last two decades.
Ella & Jaden Hiller – Modern Family
In every episode of “Modern Family,” six characters consistently appeared: Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill), Gloria Delgado-Pritchett (Sofia Vergara), Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet). However, one character, Lily Tucker-Pritchett, was portrayed by different actors during the series, not just because of twin casting.
As the popular sitcom commenced, Ella & Jaden Hiller initially portrayed Lily. The first season ran smoothly, but as Season 2 progressed, the Hiller sisters grew beyond babyhood and started to grasp their role as TV actors – a realization that didn’t sit well with them. When Michelle Hiller, the girls’ mother, conveyed her intention to withdraw her daughters from “Modern Family,” the producers attempted to dissuade her and even upped their salary offer, hoping to improve the experience for the young actresses.
Instead of choosing a career and wealth, Michelle opted to prioritize the happiness of her daughters. As a result, she withdrew Ella and Jaden from the show at a certain point. Aubrey Anderson-Emmons then stepped in to play Lily for the rest of the series. To this day, neither Ella nor Jaden Hiller has resumed acting or any sort of public life.
Harvey Spencer Stephens – The Omen
It appears that during the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was an abundance of horror movies with children as the primary focus. In some instances, these children even took on the role of the main antagonist, such as in the 1976 film “The Omen.” This movie revolves around a young boy named Damien Thorn (played by Harvey Spencer Stephens), who was secretly replaced at birth by another child due to his mother’s loss. It isn’t long before the family discovers that Damien is not an ordinary child, especially since he exhibits unusually violent behavior towards anything connected with church or religion.
In his screen debut at six years old, Stephens appeared in “The Omen”. His performance was impressive enough to earn him a Golden Globe nomination. However, when “Damien: Omen II” was released two years later, the role was taken over by Jonathan Scott-Taylor instead of Stephens. The reason for this switch, as explained by Stephens himself, is that he had little interest in pursuing an acting career. Moreover, the challenging production environment of “The Omen” may not have painted the most appealing picture of the film industry to the young actor.
Although Stephen appeared in a minor role in the 1980 TV film “Gauguin the Savage”, it was nothing like Hollywood, and this marked the end of his acting career for 26 years. He later made a brief, humorous appearance as a tabloid journalist in the 2006 remake of “The Omen”, which is his latest screen credit to date.
Joseph Sanders – Jane the Virgin
When fans wonder about the current activities of “Jane the Virgin” cast members, Joseph Sanders’ name seldom comes up. Despite portraying a significant character – Matteo, the son of Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and her husband Rafael (Justin Baldoni) – Sanders is often overlooked. However, it wasn’t Sanders who played Matteo for the longest period or in the most recent seasons. That recognition goes to Elias Janssen, who portrayed Matteo during Seasons 4 and 5.
Initially, the character Matteo was portrayed by multiple babies and infants in his early appearances. It wasn’t until Matteo turned four that Sanders became his semi-regular actor, appearing in 11 episodes. However, when Matteo truly developed as a character, Janssen stepped in for a longer run. As for Sanders, he only has two acting roles to his credit: one being the role of Matteo on “Jane the Virgin,” and another as an unnamed liquor store clerk in the 2020 independent comedy “Zola.
