Chinese Billionaire Zhang Xin Invests in Mubi, Joins Board

As a seasoned gamer with an eye for business strategy, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation upon hearing about Zhang Xin‘s investment in Mubi. With her impressive track record of success in reshaping Beijing and Shanghai skylines through SOHO China, it’s clear that she possesses an innate understanding of how to cultivate and innovate.

The Chinese billionaire and real estate tycoon, Zhang Xin, has quietly invested in art-house distributor and global streaming service, Mubi, through her New York-based film company, Closer Media. According to Mubi’s announcement on Friday, Zhang will also join the board of directors for Mubi.

Efe Cakarel, founder and CEO of Mubi, expressed his excitement in announcing Zhang Xin as a new member of our board of directors. Known for her remarkable leadership abilities, Zhang Xin has successfully established a thriving company from scratch, showcasing exceptional vision and determination. I hold her in high esteem, and I am eager to gain insights from her professional knowledge, strategic wisdom, and entrepreneurial flair as we move forward with our expansion and innovation plans.

Following her success and transforming both Beijing and Shanghai skylines with SOHO China, a real estate group she co-founded with her husband Pan Shiyi, Zhang changed direction in 2022. She relinquished her role as CEO of SOHO and established Closer Media, a film production and financing company based in Manhattan. Notable projects under Closer include “Ezra”, directed by Tony Goldwyn and starring Bobby Cannavale, Robert De Niro, and Rose Byrne; Alex Gibney’s documentary on Elon Musk titled “Musk”; and “The Monk and the Gun” from Oscar-nominated Bhutanese writer-director Pawo Choyning Dorji.

I’m thrilled to say that investing in Mubi presents me with a unique chance to be immersed in this cutting-edge business, standing right at the vanguard of the dynamic film industry. The innovative spirit of Mubi, which focuses on delivering premium content to worldwide viewers, truly ignites my enthusiasm, and I can’t wait to contribute to the company’s expansion.

In 2007, Mubi was introduced as a streaming platform by Cakarel, specializing in international art films. However, the business has expanded towards theatrical distribution in recent times. Notably, it managed the U.S. premiere of Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’, a body horror satire, which grossed over $16 million domestically. Among its latest releases are Sofia Coppola’s ‘Priscilla’, Andrea Arnold’s ‘Bird’, and Wim Wenders’ ‘Perfect Days’.

Forthcoming movies feature “The Mastermind” directed by Kelly Reichardt, featuring Josh O’Connor, and the collaborative production “Father Mother Sister Brother,” helmed by Jim Jarmusch, starring Adam Driver, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, and Vicky Krieps.
