As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can hardly contain my excitement at the news that Chris Evans is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! After his heartwarming farewell as Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, I had thought I might never see him back in action. But now, with Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon and the Russo brothers once again at the helm, it seems that fate has a way of bringing our heroes back to us when we need them most!
Following his role in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” it’s been announced that Chris Evans will rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet again, this time for “Avengers: Doomsday,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
In the upcoming movie, set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, long-term collaborators of Evans, the Russo brothers (who have previously directed Evans in four films), are taking the director’s chair. Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. will be portraying Doctor Doom in this film.
The actor portrayed Johnny Storm, also known as The Human Torch, in the movie Deadpool & Wolverine, returning to this role from a couple of Fantastic Four films produced by Fox during the 2000s. However, he was most recognized for taking on the character Steve Rogers, or Captain America, within the MCU, where he served as a key figure in the universe’s foundation.
It’s uncertain if Evans will reappear in his role as Storm or Rogers for the upcoming Marvel project, given that it involves multiple timelines and dimensions. The film is expected to bring back several actors from past movies, including those from the Fantastic Four series.
2019’s Avengers: Endgame saw Rogers, who was formerly Captain America, stepping down from his role. In this movie, Steve Rogers journeyed back in time to live out his days with his beloved, Peggy Carter (played by Hailey Atwell). After spending several decades living anonymously, he reappeared in the present to hand over the Captain America shield to his friend Sam Wilson (portrayed by Anthony Mackie).
He first portrayed the character in “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011), and later appeared in “The Avengers” (2012), “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Endgame.” He made brief appearances in “Thor: The Dark World” (2013) and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017).
2023 saw him express to GQ his willingness for a comeback, provided it felt authentic. The actor expressed, “I wouldn’t want any negative impact if it seemed like a mere money-grab, or if it didn’t meet expectations, or if it simply lacked the connection to the original.
In March 2010, Evans was finally given the role that he had previously declined on several occasions. He managed to secure this position over other notable contenders like John Krasinski, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Flueger, Scott Porter, Wilson Bethel, Mike Vogel, and Chace Crawford.
2018 marked the final day of filming Endgame for Evans. On this emotional occasion, he took to Twitter to express his gratitude. His message read, “Playing this role for the last 8 years has been an honor. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone on set, both in front and behind the camera, as well as to the audience who shared these memories with us. I remain forever grateful.
