In an unexpected turn of events, Chris McKay’s 2021 science fiction action film titled “The Tomorrow War” wasn’t initially intended for a streaming premiere by Paramount Pictures. However, due to the post-pandemic uncertainty regarding cinema releases, the studio decided to sell the movie to Amazon Studios instead. As a result, “The Tomorrow War” became one of the costliest films to make its debut on a streaming platform, receiving mixed feedback from critics. A sequel was announced in 2022, but since then, details about it have been scarce until recently.
In an interview given to ComicBook.com during promotions for his upcoming movie “The Gorge”, written by Zach Dean and directed by Scott Derrickson, it was disclosed that the sequel to “The Tomorrow War” is making significant progress. Dean hinted that filming for the sequel may commence shortly, expressing admiration for Chris Pratt’s performance in “The Tomorrow War”.
1. “The project is advancing: I’ve penned the second movie, and it appears they’re still refining the storyline. I believe it’s set to be released soon. One of Chris’ strengths lies in his ability to make his character’s emotions relatable. His humor puts you at ease, and his acting skills showcase a deep emotional range. The new script requires a slightly different approach but retains the same underlying ideas. There were opportunities for the storyline to take a darker turn.”
2. “The development of the second film is moving forward: I’ve written it, and I understand they’re still working on refining the narrative. It seems like it’s going to happen, and it looks like it will happen rather quickly. One of Chris’ talents lies in his ability to make us feel connected to his character’s feelings. His humor makes you comfortable, while his acting showcases a broad emotional range. The new script requires a different take on similar concepts, but it could have taken a darker path.”

One of Chris’ skills lies in making his character’s feelings relatable. His humor creates a sense of comfort, while his acting showcases a wide range of emotions. The new script requires a unique perspective on familiar ideas, but it could have taken a more somber direction.”

One of Chris’ strengths lies in his ability to connect with his character’s emotions. His humor creates a sense of ease, while his acting showcases a broad emotional spectrum. The new script requires a fresh interpretation of similar themes, but there was an opportunity for the storyline to take a more somber turn.”
‘The Tomorrow War’ Was Never Meant to Be a Streaming-Only Title
It’s intriguing that Dean has mentioned his script is finished but modifications are ongoing, considering the somewhat unfavorable reviews the initial film garnered. It appears that any upcoming sequel by McKay and Dean might require tweaks to the plot to avoid the level of criticism the first movie faced. Additionally, it’s challenging to predict how the film would have fared had it been released in cinemas as originally planned.
In China, the movie “The Tomorrow War” had its debut, pulling in $8 million over its opening weekend and a total of $18 million. On the other hand, domestically, it thrived on streaming platforms, garnering 2.41 million streams in just the first three days – a record for Prime originals. Although some might label this 2021 film as a box-office failure, that claim seems questionable, particularly when considering how challenging it was for the entire theatrical landscape to endure during and post the COVID-19 pandemic.
Should the team responsible for the film address and refine the plot issues within the script, making it ready for production, “Tomorrow War 2” might find itself premiering in a completely distinct context compared to the original. In the past, Amazon Prime Video has granted theatrical releases to many of its prominent titles, so there’s a possibility that “Tomorrow War 2” could receive similar treatment. The question now is whether McKay and Dean can craft a compelling story or if additional development is necessary. With Chris Pratt and other main cast members expected to reprise their roles, the “Tomorrow War” series may still have an opportunity to dazzle on the big screen.
