Praise be, The Handmaid’s Tale has made its runway debut.
In partnership with Hulu, fashion designer Christian Siriano has reinvented the famous red robe from Gilead for a runway show, marking the sixth and final season of their popular Emmy-winning dystopian series. This unveiling on the catwalk also honors the 40th anniversary of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel that serves as the basis for the show.
Christian Siriano, a well-known fashion designer, has remade the popular red robe from Gilead for a show on the runway. This is in collaboration with Hulu during their final season of an award-winning TV series based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel. The event also marks the 40th anniversary of that same book.
The unique creation made its first appearance in Siriano’s Fall/Winter 2025 assortment. He explained that the entire collection drew inspiration from the concept of futurism and advanced technology.
I was captivated by Siriano’s vibrant red cloak, which seemed to burst with energy among the collection. It was designed as a draped cape with strong, defined shoulders and an expansive hood. On the runway, this hood was discarded, symbolizing liberation and empowerment. By revitalizing the color red, Siriano and Hulu are collaborating to share a compelling tale of resilience and transformation. This garment, historically associated with oppression, is now redefined as a symbol of power and strength, according to the designer’s statement.
The iconic red cloak of the show was introduced for the first time in April 2017 during season one, and since then, it has been a symbol of global protest for women’s rights. The production of the first season coincided with the 2016 U.S. election that led to Donald Trump’s presidency. As the show’s oppressive and misogynistic society started to resemble reality, it became a significant cultural reference point.
This season’s design concept is a luxurious yet understated backdrop for a vibrant collection full of texture and color. The collection showcases innovative techniques and fabrications that mimic rugged materials such as steel, glass, and leather. Sculptural shapes are created using shiny oil slick vinyls, iridescent silks, metallic lamé, and intricate abstract embroideries that resemble tire tracks. Siriano maintained a delicate balance between strength and empowerment with his signature romanticism and whimsy during the runway show, which was graced by celebrities including Katie Holmes, Tiffany Haddish, Whoopi Goldberg, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Bedingfield, Laverne Cox, Adam Lambert, among others.
The television series, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” will air its last season this coming spring. As of now, a specific date for the premiere is still unknown.
