Christina Aguilera on Why It’s “Corny” When Celebrities “Do Things Intentionally” to Stay Relevant

As a gamer with a vast library of music spanning over two decades, I wholeheartedly respect and admire Christina Aguilera‘s fearless approach to her artistry. Her unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and refusing to be pigeonholed is truly inspiring. It’s like she’s composing the soundtrack of our lives, not just singing songs.

Christina Aguilera expresses deep satisfaction with the bold moves and opportunities she’s embraced during her 25-year journey in the music business, regardless of public reception.

In a recent chat with “Paper” magazine, the music legend candidly discussed the deliberate choices behind all her works throughout her career, emphasizing that she’s never put out anything merely to garner “publicity” or “fuss.” This was evident in her song “Dirrty,” from her 2002 album “Stripped,” which marked a bold step towards expressing her sexuality, a stark contrast to her self-titled debut album from 1999.

She clarified, “You have the freedom to choose your path. You can opt for the conventional route, blending in with the crowd, or you can take bold steps that stir emotions and create a stir. I personally believe it’s contrived to deliberately aim for pop culture trends, seek attention, or maintain relevance. This often results in something that strays from genuine artistry.”

The “Genie In A Bottle” singer explained, “It’s possible to be a pop artist while remaining true to yourself, and at the same time, deliver meaningful messages and keep things fresh. I’ve never been drawn to creating the same album repeatedly; that notion of music is my least favorite. As musicians, we should observe the evolution of music and social trends. Our role is about connecting with people and attempting to unite them.”

For Aguilera, creativity is all about the desire to innovate and not settling for the familiar. This is why she referred to her 2010 album, “Bionic,” as an “adventurous album,” while her 2006 album, “Back to Basics,” was a bit more relatable due to its closer connection to everyday experiences.

“The Grammy-winning artist emphasized that they need to be confident in their message, beliefs, and actions. They’ve made it clear over their career that they aren’t afraid to take chances and venture into new territory. It’s tempting to stick with what’s familiar for the public’s comfort, but they prefer to challenge this norm. By altering their sound on every album, they’ve sought novelty, experimented, and refused to be pigeonholed as a one-dimensional artist specializing in ballads.”
