Christopher Landon Clears His Name in Melissa Barrera’s ‘Scream 7’ Exit Controversy

The production of the film “Drop” nearly collapsed after the dismissal of a key figure, followed by Jenna Ortega’s departure and the director’s resignation amidst controversy. Now, the director of “Drop” has spoken out about the challenges he encountered due to Melissa Barrera’s termination, emphasizing that he was not involved in this decision, despite speculation to the contrary online.

In a chat with Vanity Fair for his latest film “Drop”, Landon openly discussed Barrera’s dismissal and clarified that he had no control over the decision. His words were:

“During our conversation about my new movie, ‘Drop’, I revealed to Vanity Fair the facts surrounding Barrera’s termination, emphasizing that I was powerless to intervene in any manner.

I didn’t cause her dismissal. Many believe I was involved, but I assure you, it wasn’t my action. In truth, I had no influence over the situation at all. It seems that due to a lack of understanding about how Hollywood operates and its power structure, people jumped to conclusions, pointing fingers at me. They said I was the one behind the scenes, but in reality, they were mistaking me for someone more powerful.

As a dedicated cinephile, I found myself deeply distressed when Barrera’s sudden departure from the movie was caused by a string of antisemitic posts on social media. Unfortunately, this situation triggered some intensely hostile and malicious segments of the fanbase, who directed their venom towards me – Landon – with threats against my children to boot. I felt compelled to address this unfortunate incident, stating:

In a chilling turn of events, I found myself and my family in grave danger as individuals made direct threats against our lives. The situation escalated so severely that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) became involved. Menacing messages were sent to me, stating, “I will track down your children and kill them because you back child murder.” Consequently, the head of security at multiple studios, along with the FBI, had to scrutinize these threats. The level of hostility was alarmingly high, and the situation was truly terrifying.

‘Scream 7’ Is Now In Control of a New Team

Originally penned by Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter for “Scream,” is set to direct “Scream 7.” After the exit of Barrera and Ortega, the movie’s original plot was significantly revised, offering a unique storyline that deviates considerably from what we would have experienced under Landon’s direction.

In “Scream 7,” Neve Campbell will rejoin the series alongside Courteney Cox. Additionally, there are some unexpected returns for characters played by David Arquette, Scott Foley, and Matthew Lillard – Dewey Riley, Roman Bridger, and Stu Macher respectively. It remains a mystery as to why these apparently deceased characters will feature in the film, with both Lillard and Foley expressing bafflement and intrigue in their interviews about the plot developments.

Initially, it seemed Patrick Dempsey would reprise his character, Mark Kincaid, in the new installment of the franchise, a fact suggested in earlier films and later confirmed. However, fans were disappointed when it became clear that Dempsey wouldn’t be returning due to scheduling conflicts caused by California wildfires, leaving his character role open for another actor. In the meantime, Sydney Prescott, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, is married to a different Mark, Mark Evans, portrayed by Joel McHale.

Without a doubt, it has been announced that “Scream 7” will grace the big screen on February 27, 2026. This could mark another triumph for the nearly three-decade-old horror series or serve as a reminder that some things should remain undisturbed in their graves.
