Christopher Landon Left ‘Scream 7’ Following Death Threats Over Melissa Barrera Firing: “I Did Not Fire Her”

Christopher Landon, initially slated as director for Scream 7, is disclosing the behind-the-scenes details about Melissa Barrera’s dismissal from the movie.

In a recent conversation with Vanity Fair, Landon shared that making Scream 7 was a challenging and turbulent journey. Notably, Melissa Barrera, who starred in Scream and Scream VI, was removed from the seventh film in November 2023 due to her controversial social media posts regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Landon clearly remembers when Spyglass Media Group, the film’s producer, phoned him to share the unfortunate news: they had decided to terminate her services. It all felt like a sudden collapse for him.

Landon distinctly recollects being informed by Spyglass Media Group, the production company responsible for the movie, that she was no longer part of their team. The news hit him hard and made everything seem to crumble instantly.

However, once Jenna Ortega, Barrera’s fellow actor, chose to exit the production after being dismissed, the atmosphere became “extremely hostile and genuinely alarming” due to public accusations directed at Landon regarding the predicament.

The director stated that there were serious threats against him and his family, with some individuals even expressing intent to harm his children because he backs a cause associated with child murder. These threats became so severe that the FBI and studio security teams felt compelled to investigate them further.

On the contrary, Landon clarified he wasn’t involved, stating to Vanity Fair: “I didn’t dismiss her. Many believe I played a role, but it wasn’t me who made that decision. I had absolutely no influence over the situation.

Ortega recently explained her reason for departing. She stated that neither pay nor scheduling factors were involved. Instead, she mentioned the escalating “Melissa situation” as well as other issues that were leading to a disintegration of the situation.

Due to the harsh criticism and negative reactions the “Freaky” director encountered, he chose to withdraw from the project himself, expressing that the mistreatment had tainted his experience and diminished his enthusiasm for continuing with it.

Landon has moved forward because the previous experience prepared him to helm his new movie titled “Drop“, which has been praised and will be released in theaters starting this Friday. Meanwhile, “Scream 7” is being directed by Kevin Williamson and will debut in February next year. The original cast members, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, are set to reappear in it.
