Christopher Meloni Reveals Celeb Who Left Him The Most Starstruck, And I Can't Imagine Law & Order Fans Would Guess It

As a long-time admirer of Christopher Meloni‘s diverse acting career, I find myself constantly amazed by his ability to tackle both comedic and dramatic roles with equal finesse. What strikes me most about this article is the revelation of Terry Gilliam as the person who left Meloni the most starstruck. It’s truly heartwarming to know that a man whose humor I’ve grown up with has such deep admiration for one of my personal comedy heroes as well.

In the prime of his extensive and prosperous acting career, Christopher Meloni is arguably best known by the average viewer for his extended roles as Eliott Stabler, first in Law & Order: SVU, then in its spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime. Interestingly enough, the fifth season of this latter series moved from NBC to Peacock. Although fans will have to wait until 2025 for Stabler’s reappearance on TV, the actor himself has recently disclosed a number of fascinating tidbits about his career and personal life, such as who among the celebrities left him the most awestruck.

After spending over 15 years playing Stabler and having smaller roles in shows like Oz, The Handmaid’s Tale, Pose, and others, fans might forget about the significant role comedy has played in Chris Meloni’s career. However, it’s Gene Jenkinson from Wet Hot American Summer we’re talking about – his comeback for Netflix’s spinoff series delivered the funniest First Day of Camp moment yet! It’s not surprising then, that he was caught off guard by an accomplished comedian.

Meloni gave US Weekly the rundown on a variety of topics, including the early-career moment when he met and worked for Monty Python’s animation genius-turned-filmmaker Terry Gilliam. In his words:

The most awe-inspiring experience of my life came when I worked on the film 12 Monkeys and encountered Terry Gilliam, whom I’ve admired since his creation of Brazil – a movie that held great significance for me. During our conversation, I found myself on the verge of tears as I expressed my deep appreciation for both Brazil and his work with Monty Python.

Being an ardent admirer of Meloni’s work, particularly his side-splitting performances in shows like “Harley Quinn,” “Wonder Showzen,” and “Veep,” as well as his comic book adaptation “Happy,” I was thrilled to learn about his encounter with his idols early in his Hollywood journey. This happened during the production of his third film, a shift from working under Ivan Reitman to Terry Gilliam – an undoubtedly dramatic change of pace!

It’s clear that Meloni and Gilliam got along quite well. Three years after their initial meeting, the actor made a funny appearance in a minor role as hotel clerk Sven in Gilliam’s subsequent film, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. Despite not collaborating since then, it appears that Meloni continues to admire Gilliam greatly, considering him a highly influential director if Gilliam remains the celebrity who left him most awestruck.

Regarding my top favorites from the six troupe members’ works, I unwaveringly support “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.” However, “Brazil” and “12 Monkeys” have secured their places in my Top 5 list elsewhere, while “Fawlty Towers” and “Life of Brian” complete the remaining slots. To clarify, this is just my personal preference, even though no one asked.

The Actors Christopher Meloni Looked Up To The Most

Apart from expressing gratitude towards Terry Gilliam, Christopher Meloni acknowledged the actors who significantly influenced him during his younger years and left an indelible impression due to their exceptional skills. To quote him directly:

When I was growing up, I admired Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, Daniel Day- Lewis, and Christian Slater. What I appreciate most about them is their ability to completely embody their character roles – it’s truly awe-inspiring.

Oh, what a dream come true it would be if De Niro, Day-Lewis, Slater, and Meloni could all appear together in a film directed by Terry Gilliam! I’m going to toss some coins into a fountain with the hope of making this magical collaboration a reality.

Looking forward to Dean Norris rejoining the Stabler family for another round of sibling affection, the fifth season of Law & Order: Organized Crime is expected to air on Peacock in early 2025 for subscribers. We’re eagerly waiting for more details to be revealed.
