Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Is the First Film to Ever Use IMAX Like This

As a devoted movie enthusiast, for quite some time, I’ve admired writer-director Christopher Nolan’s extraordinary use of IMAX cameras to create unparalleled blockbuster adventures that stand out from the rest. Now, the esteemed Oscar-winner behind Oppenheimer is fully embracing the large-scale format, and I can hardly wait!

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film (due out next summer), an expansive retelling of Homer’s epic tale, “The Odyssey,” is slated to become the very first commercial motion picture ever filmed exclusively using IMAX cameras.

In the production notes for “Oppenheimer,” Nolan states that large-format photography offers outstanding clarity as its main advantage. This format, he adds, provides viewers with an opportunity to completely immerse themselves within the narrative and the world depicted on screen.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey to make history with new IMAX cameras

At the Cannes Film Festival, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond shared that Chris had challenged him, saying, “If you manage to crack the code on solving these issues, I’ll ensure ‘Odyssey’ plays in IMAX at 100%. As a result, we’ve been compelled to reconsider and reinvent various aspects of our business, such as film recorders and cameras.

According to the latest reports, the company has designed and produced innovative models that are not only quieter but also lighter than their predecessors. These models have been exclusively assigned for use in the Nolan production, with other projects gaining access to them after The Odyssey is completed.

On the movie, it’s Hoyte van Hoytema who is responsible for the camera work. He has worked together with a highly regarded director before on projects like Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer.

Matt Damon, famously known for his roles in “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer,” will be portraying the lead character Odysseus. It’s worth mentioning that he’s one of several top-tier actors Christopher Nolan was able to attract for this project with his captivating directorial appeal. Among others, Tom Holland (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”), Zendaya (“Challengers”), Anne Hathaway (“The Devil Wears Prada”), Lupita Nyong’o (“The Wild Robot”), Robert Pattinson (“Tenet”), Charlize Theron (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Elliot Page (“Inception”), Benny Safdie (“Oppenheimer”), Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead”), John Leguizamo (“John Wick”), and Mia Goth (from Ti West’s “X trilogy”) are also part of the star-studded cast.

When does The Odyssey open in theaters?

The epic tale of “The Odyssey” is set to grace the silver screen on July 17, 2026. Following his collaboration with Universal Pictures in the upcoming film “Oppenheimer“, this will mark director Christopher Nolan’s second joint project with them.
