Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Will Be the First Film Shot Entirely in IMAX

As he began shooting his upcoming, celeb-filled film, adapted from Homer’s epic, he put IMAX chief Rich Gelfond to the test with a potential game-changer for the industry. During a press conference at Cannes Film Festival, Gelfond disclosed that “The Odyssey” would make cinematic history by being the first film ever filmed entirely using IMAX cameras.

Gelfond began by stating, “Chris will probably be pleased that I’m saying this, which is odd.” Previously, approximately a year before Chris began working on Odyssey, he approached me and said, “Rich, I have an idea. I want to create a whole film using IMAX cameras.

Gelfond went into more detail about the hurdles associated with this. Specifically, Nolan has frequently utilized the IMAX format in his past ventures such as “The Dark Knight” (2008), “Dunkirk” (2017), “Tenet” (2020), and most recently, “Oppenheimer.” Notably, “Oppenheimer” brought in an impressive $100 million on IMAX screens exclusively, eventually earning a total of $976.2 million globally. This success follows Universal executive Jim Orr’s statement about the film.

The IMAX chief went on to elaborate, discussing several difficulties such as restocking, handling galley sounds, and promptly reviewing daily footage. In essence, he pointed out numerous challenges they were facing.

Nevertheless, Nolan didn’t back down and posed a question to the IMAX team: “If you can find a way to tackle these issues, I’ll make Odyssey entirely using IMAX cameras.” And guess what? We did manage to solve his problems. So, this film will be the first-ever movie released that was filmed 100% with IMAX cameras.

What Is The Odyssey About?

In simpler terms, Nolan’s next film, titled “The Odyssey,” will be his second project with Universal Pictures following his departure from Warner Bros. post-“Tenet.” This upcoming movie is inspired by Homer’s famous epic and boasts a projected budget of $250 million (according to reports), making it Nolan’s costliest production so far. His ambition to capture the classic using IMAX cameras contributes significantly to the film’s hefty production cost.

In addition to reuniting with some long-time collaborators, the upcoming film “The Odyssey” will see Matt Damon playing the legendary Greek figure, Odysseus of Ithaca. Damon has worked with director Christopher Nolan on previous projects such as “Interstellar” and “Oppenheimer”. Joining him in this stellar cast are Anne Hathaway (known for her roles in “Interstellar”, “The Dark Knight Rises”), Elizabeth Debicki (“Tenet”), Elliot Page (“Inception”), Himesh Patel (“Tenet”), Bill Irwin (“Interstellar”), and Benny Safdie (“Oppenheimer”).

Alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and Mia Goth (and several others) will be part of the cast.
