In a recent chat, Christopher Walken admitted he’s not big on technology. In fact, the star of “Severance” chose to watch his performance in the popular Apple TV+ show by playing a DVD instead.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Christopher Walken, aged 81, mentioned that he receives television signals through a satellite dish installed at his home. Consequently, he has watched the series “Severance” on DVDs which are of good quality to be sent to him. Additionally, he doesn’t own a cell phone and has never used email or social media platforms like Twitter.
A well-regarded and admired actor, Walken, manages to give standout performances despite maintaining a simple, tech-free lifestyle. To illustrate this, consider the show Severance, a psychological thriller revolving around the advanced process of separating work memories from real life – Walken was even nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of Burt in Season 1 of the popular series.
In a recent turn of events, Walken was featured in “Dune: Part 2,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, portraying Shaddam IV. Despite being a sci-fi masterpiece, “Dune” seems to evoke a sense of a medieval or Roman era, making it an ideal fit for the low-tech style that suits Walken well. Yet, it’s hard to imagine any role that wouldn’t suit the Academy Award-winning actor.
As Vulture’s Nate Jones characterized Walken’s Dune performance:
In addition, Christopher Walken portrays Emperor Shaddam IV, who seems to be either oblivious or unconcerned about the appropriate behavior expected in Dune films. If you bring on board Christopher Walken, regardless of whether he’s acting alongside numerous veiled Bene Gesserit sisters, you can count on him delivering a typical Christopher Walken performance.
The World Wants Walken
And that’s exactly what the world hopes for. Indeed, when asked about his potential return in the third Dune film, inspired by Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah novel, Walken expressed…
As a film enthusiast, I’ve never found myself concluding one project and immediately knowing what’s next on my list. This question – ‘Why do you do that?’ – is frequently posed to me. Truth be told, I don’t actively choose projects; I accept jobs. I go for the best opportunity available at any given moment. This involves various aspects of art, collaboration with talented individuals, sometimes the location, and of course, compensation. If only I could make choices!
Despite seemingly not having a hand in the decision-making process, Walken has delivered exceptional performances in various roles, such as The Deer Hunter, for which he won an Oscar, and True Romance, Pulp Fiction, and Wedding Crashers among others. His portrayal of Bruce Dickinson in SNL’s “More Cowbell” sketch is now almost legendary.
Regarding Severance, Walken elaborated on his fondness for the part, describing it as “an exceptionally unique assignment.
The experience was intriguingly amusing and frightening at the same time, which I’ve always believed makes for an excellent mix. Plus, the involvement of director Ben Stiller added to the nostalgia. I shared a stage with him three decades ago, and his parents were acquaintances of mine. Similarly, there was John Turturro, with whom I’ve had a friendship spanning four decades, and we started our acting careers together. Over time, it becomes evident when actors genuinely like each other, as is the case here.
