Chuck Todd to Exit NBC News

Chuck Todd, who served as the host of “Meet the Press” and was a long-standing figure in NBC News’ political news coverage for almost twenty years, has decided to part ways with the network.

Todd told his NBC colleagues about his decision Friday morning. It will also be his last day.

He mentioned that he plans on bringing his “ChuckToddcast” along, and that it’s set to find a “new base” shortly.

NBC News expressed appreciation for Chuck’s significant contributions to our political news coverage over his almost 20-year tenure, as well as his unwavering dedication to Meet the Press and its lasting impact. We extend our best wishes to him for his future ventures,” a representative from NBC News stated.

Read Todd’s note below.

Today marks my final day at NBC. I began here as political director back in 2007, just a month before my son was born, and now he’s about to graduate from high school. Needless to say, I’ve been here for quite some time.

Leaving a place that has served as my professional home for so long isn’t easy, but I’m looking forward to a few exciting new projects that are on the verge of becoming reality. So, I’m grateful for this opportunity to start fresh during such an important transition.

The ChuckToddcast will also be making the move with me (thanks, NBC). Keep an eye out for news about its new home soon. Rest assured, I plan to continue sharing my political insights and analysis, using data and history as crucial benchmarks for understanding our past, present, and future.

The media industry has a lot of work ahead to regain the trust of audiences, and I believe the best approach is to start from the ground up. At heart, I’m an entrepreneur – I spent my first 15 years in this profession helping to launch the political newsletter craze that dominates today. And now is the perfect time for change. The only way to repair this information ecosystem is by stopping the complaints about social media manipulation and instead getting down to work at the local level. National media can’t rebuild trust without strong partnerships locally, and trying to game algorithms won’t lead to informed reporting. People are yearning for community, something that national media or major social media companies can’t provide as effectively as local media.

When I announced my departure from MTP, I expressed my concerns about our current historical moment but also felt reassured by the standards we at NBC have fought hard to uphold. We can’t tolerate propaganda, but it doesn’t mean turning a blind eye; if you ignore reality, you’ll miss the most significant stories. Being an authentic political journalist isn’t about building a brand; it’s about reporting the facts and explaining their significance without imposing judgment on the public’s interpretations. If you do this job for popularity or activism, you’re doing it wrong.

I take immense pride in the work I’ve accomplished alongside the incredible team I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with over these past two decades (and five presidents). The strength of NBC lies in its collaboration; success here can’t be achieved without being a great team player. If I start naming names, I’ll inevitably leave someone out, and that wouldn’t be right. I was proud to work at the former home of David Brinkley, Tom Brokaw, and Tim Russert. To this day, I can hardly believe I followed in their remarkable footsteps. That will always be an unforgettable honor.

Please don’t hesitate to stay in touch. My contact information is provided below. Thank you, NBC, and I look forward to the possibility of working with many of you again in the future. And needless to say, I’ll also be watching!

Thank you,
Chuck Todd
