As a seasoned Witcher gamer, who’s been through the trials and tribulations of the Continent with Geralt, I must say that the prospect of Ciri taking center stage in The Witcher 4 is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking.
Following an impressive reveal at the 2024 Game Awards, developers CD Projekt RED have made it official: A significant number of Witcher enthusiasts will join Ciri as the main character in the upcoming chapter of the series’ narrative.
Inheriting the Lynx medallion and assuming the role of her foster father Geralt, Ciri sets out on an adventurous path as a debated hunter of monstrous creatures.
In The Witcher 4, although many rely on witchers to solve their monster issues, the general populace continues to view them as monstrous aberrations themselves. This perspective might explain why so few witchers survive.
Which brings us to the all-new Lynx medallion and the school it represents.
This interesting lore item can now be purchased via CDPR’s website but it’s more than a collector’s item at this point. This medallion highly indicates that there may be a huge time gap between Witcher 3 and Witcher 4, considering how witchers establish witcher schools.
Following the collapse of the Order of the Witchers, most schools dedicated to training these unique warriors sprung up. Now that Ciri is enrolled in one such school, it implies that mages and witchers (including Geralt and Yennefer) have discovered a method for performing mutations and resurrecting the art of creating witchers once more.
In the trailer, Ciri is seen to have emerald cat eyes, presumably because she was half-mutated compared to Geralt’s full-on yellow cat eyes. Ciri was still able to retain some parts of her when she had her witcher abilities, including her Elder Blood.
Building a Witcher school, carrying out the Trial of the Grasses, and eventually transforming Ciri into a part-witcher would require a substantial length of time. Given that the School of the Wolf was founded during the 11th century, well after the demise of the Order of Witchers, establishing the School of the Lynx becomes a more complex task.
Despite this, by the conclusion of The Witcher 3, there were no longer any operational witcher schools in existence. It’s possible that CDPR is planning to deviate from the established lore, given the trailer’s depiction of a self-sufficient and powerful young witcher named Ciri.
From the trailer’s depiction, it appears that witchers continue to face societal ostracism, likely due to lingering effects stemming from events seen in The Witcher 3. In this portrayal, villagers seem to harbor disdain towards Ciri despite her heroic act of protecting them from a monster.
In these games, this specific social setting has significantly influenced the development of key characters like Geralt and Vesemir by presenting them with critical social dilemmas. It’s possible that Ciri may encounter similar trials as Geralt did, and we could even enjoy a couple of exciting Gwent matches along the way.
Regardless of whether you believe Ciri should star in the next Witcher game as the main character or if you’d rather create your own character from any Witcher school, ensure you keep up-to-date on the most recent gaming updates and tales by following Gfinity Esports.
