Civilization 7 dev hints at additional Ages to be added in expansions

As a seasoned gamer with decades worth of strategy games under my belt, I must say that the prospect of Civilization 7 is nothing short of exhilarating. Having had the privilege to get an early glimpse of this highly anticipated title at Gamescom 2024, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation that borders on the edge of obsession.

At Gamescom 2024, Civilization VII was once more unveiled, and fortunately, I had the opportunity to delve into the gameplay of the forefather in the 4X strategy genre. Additionally, I managed to chat with the series’ Creative Director, Ed Beach.

In the upcoming year, Civilization VII is set for release on both PCs and various consoles, including the Nintendo Switch. However, it’s important to remember that the game’s launch is merely a start. Being longtime enthusiasts, you might be wondering about future expansions. So, I decided to inquire about their plans.

Civ 7 dev suggests new Ages could come in expansions

In the upcoming release of Civilization 7, a novel Ages system is being introduced, which the developer has described as the most challenging aspect for fans to adapt to.

Beach humorously suggests that there might be some clues regarding future expansion content, without explicitly saying so.

“The current Age system works seamlessly in a modular fashion. It’s as if each age snaps smoothly onto the previous one, much like how adapters fit into an electrical outlet.”

This allows us to explore various possibilities during expansions, offering unique chances in the future. Previously, expansions were typically built upon the game board itself, leading to numerous additions on top of the original game.

We will undoubtedly improve, bolster, expand the existing content, and introduce new Civilizations onto the historical base we initiate.

But expansions are gonna take a little bit of a different look this time and it’s because of that modular nature of the game that we can do different things with them.”
