Cj Hendry Brings a 'Flower Market' to NYC's Roosevelt Island

As a longtime art enthusiast and someone who has attended countless exhibitions, I must say that Cj Hendry’s “Flower Market” at FDR Four Freedoms Park is a truly exceptional immersive experience. It’s not every day you get to wander through a field of 100,000 handcrafted flowers! The detail and thoughtfulness behind each bloom are astounding, making it an absolute delight for the senses.

Over the recent weekend, renowned modern artist Cj Hendry set up an enchanting flower exhibit titled “Flower Market” at the FDR Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island, New York. This extraordinary display, housed within a massive 120-foot by 40-foot greenhouse, showcases a whopping 100,000 handcrafted blossoms that stir feelings of innocent delight and happiness. In partnership with the French skincare brand Clé de Peau Beauté and Four Freedoms Park Conservancy, the artist invites everyone to take a moment, appreciate, and even sniff these beautiful roses.

At the exhibition, Hendry drew upon a quote by American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson: “While many people pass through the field, only a few truly notice the flowers.” Reflecting this concept, visitors were encouraged to stroll among the blossoms, feel their soft petals, and even choose one as a memento.

From the twenty-one diverse types of flowers, you’ll spot sunflowers, red roses, and daffodils. A cluster of lilies signifies the organic components in Clé de Peau Beauté’s skincare serum. Moreover, other blooms evoke symbols from the Roosevelt family: the yellow Eleanor Roosevelt rose, tulips due to their Dutch lineage, and peonies, which are iconic to their family farm. Additionally, the exposition includes twelve original sketches by the artist amidst the lush landscape.

Flower Market showcases Hendry’s knack for captivating audiences through intellectually stimulating art pieces. As the architect Louis Kahn once said, “The garden is a personal control of nature.” Many of Hendry’s works, and in this exhibition particularly, revolve around molding environments and creating a space that transports participants away from their everyday lives.
