As a dedicated gamer and art enthusiast, I have been following the career of Claire Tabouret with great interest for quite some time now. Her unique style and profound exploration of womanhood through her gestural portrait paintings have always intrigued me. So, when I came across this news about her new solo exhibition at Château La Coste in the South of France, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation.
French artist Claire Tabouret returns to her roots in the South of France for a new solo show at Château La Coste. In partnership with Manufacture de Sèvres, this exhibition, titled L’Éloquence des Larmes (The Eloquence of Tears), offers Tabouret, known internationally for her expressive portrait paintings featuring nautical themes and stories of youth and self-exploration, an opportunity to explore a fresh creative direction. Through the medium of ceramic vessels, she delves deeper into the topic of womanhood.
After welcoming her second baby into the world, Claire Tabouret thought up the idea for her latest project while pregnant. According to Château La Coste, which functions as both a vineyard and restaurant, the females portrayed by Tabouret grieve the death of a child. In creating this collection, Tabouret called upon the mournful, maternal figures present in historical art. Firmly grounded in modern times, the anguished cries of these women resonate with the growing turmoil of our increasingly volatile global environment.
Over the last decade, Tabouret has experienced a remarkable ascent in the contemporary art scene, with galleries Almine Rech and Perrotin representing her works. Known for her introspective portraits featuring somber individuals or clusters of children, Tabouret delves into the ongoing metamorphosis of self through her artwork. In her pursuit to broaden her artistic horizons, she has turned to ceramics as a new medium, believing that this change will eventually influence her painting techniques in unexpected ways. As she puts it, “There’s a connection to volume that alters my perspective on painting. New, hidden aspects are emerging…”
The Eloquence of Tears is on view at Château La Coste until September 2024.
