In 2010, film enthusiasts everywhere were universally shocked when the highly anticipated, fantasy-drama collaboration between Matt Damon and Clint Eastwood failed critically upon release, receiving a mix of mediocre reviews and harsh criticism. However, more than a decade later, Hereafter is experiencing an unexpected resurgence, climbing back from its initial failure to claim the fourth spot on Max’s streaming charts this week.
Originally penned by Peter Morgan for Rush, Hereafter was masterfully directed, produced, and scored by Clint Eastwood, featuring Matt Damon as one of the main characters. The movie revolves around three individuals: George Lonegan, a resistant American factory worker who finds himself conversing with the deceased; Marie Lelay, a tenacious French journalist who brushes with death; and young Marcus, a British student grappling with the loss of his loved one. As they each grapple with their tumultuous and frequently harrowing encounters with mortality, all three characters find themselves searching for purpose in life. Eventually, their shared struggles bring them together, providing solace when the rest of the world seems to abandon them.
In my perspective, what really captivated me about the script for Hereafter was its uncharted supernatural dimensions as a filmmaker. Yet, it wasn’t just the mystical elements that drew me in; the movie also offered a more tangible side, such as Marie Lelay’s near-death experience being based on the 2004 Indian tsunami, which ironically led to the film’s premature withdrawal from Japanese cinemas following the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 2011. However, what truly resonated with me in Hereafter‘s narrative was its exploration of one of life’s most profound enigmas: death. As Eastwood put it, “There’s a certain huckster element to the hereafter, to those who exploit people’s faith in an afterlife. It seems humanity isn’t willing to accept that this is our only life and we should make the best of it while we’re here. There doesn’t have to be immortality or eternal life; embracing some religious belief isn’t necessary. I don’t have the answer.
It’s possible that Clint Eastwood decided to retain the initial, more understated conclusion of the script instead of adopting Morgan’s more dramatic rewrite, which was suggested due to criticism from Steven Spielberg, who was an executive producer on ‘Hereafter’.
Perhaps there exists an afterlife, yet I remain uncertain, choosing instead to explore the concept with an open mind. I merely narrate the tale as I perceive it.
What Went Wrong With ‘Hereafter?’
In spite of an engaging concept and two highly skilled directors, the film “Hereafter” was generally panned by critics. It earned a score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers commenting that it failed to deliver the emotional impact it had promised. Critics like Deborah Ross from The Spectator described the direction as dull and noted that the film seemed indifferent towards its own subject matter. Others criticized the lack of action or suspense, arguing that the performances in “Hereafter” didn’t hold their interest. However, there were also a few positive reviews scattered among the negative ones. Some viewers found Eastwood’s subtle, thoughtful approach to the theme of death to be a poignant reflection of human fragility and our curiosity about the unknown. As David Ansen from Newsweek put it, “Hereafter” tackled a subject that could have easily slipped into sentimental, spiritual clichés, but not in Eastwood’s straightforward, unsentimental hands. He approached death with clear, open, questioning eyes.
It’s quite plausible that in 2010, the world might not have been ready for the subtle charm of “Hereafter”. Back then, the MCU was just starting to take off, flooding the market with superhero movies full of rapid dialogue and endless action. However, by 2025, viewers seem to be yearning for something more than the saturated, heavily CGI’d dominance of Disney. In a time where deep emotional connections are often overlooked, and hope appears scarce – it’s not surprising that a tranquil tale about humanity and spirituality is reigning on streaming platforms.
