As a long-time gamer who has seen countless shifts in the gaming industry, I can’t help but draw parallels between the recent move by CNN and the evolution of subscription-based content models we’ve witnessed in the world of video games.
This past week, CNN implemented a digital subscription service as part of a significant change in their business approach.
Currently, CNN executive vice president of digital products and services, Alex MacCallum, penned a note to the team informing that subscribers would not only have unrestricted access to articles on CNN.com but also enjoy perks such as special election features, original documentaries, a carefully selected daily dose of our top-tier journalism, and reduced digital advertisements.
That exclusive content, it turns out, was closer than some may have been expecting.
On Friday, CNN debuted their first “Flash Doc,” titled “The Masculinity Campaign,” exclusively for their digital subscribers. This marks the beginning of a planned series of exclusive videos for CNN’s paid users.
The Masculinity Campaign explores instances where masculinity has historically influenced elections, even in situations where a female candidate is involved.
On Friday, the document was prominently displayed on the CNN.com homepage, labeled as “exclusive content for subscribers.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “I’m excited to hear about Flash Docs creating a lineup of brief documentaries, each lasting 10 minutes or less, capitalizing on trending news and cultural moments. They’re banking on these quick, digestible videos appealing to the modern, primarily mobile-centric audience.
In addition to their regular CNN subscription, users will gain access to a collection of documentary pieces – ranging from brief to comprehensive – produced by the designated team. This assortment encompasses stories on personalities such as Taylor Swift, Serena Williams, and more.
Over the next few weeks and months, the news organization plans to unveil additional content tailored for subscribers, aiming to discover what resonates with them. With CNN focusing on its digital subscription service as a key growth strategy, it will be crucial for them to enhance their exclusive content and identify their core competencies.
