Cobie Smulders Would Return to the MCU After Her Controversial Secret Invasion Death

As a film enthusiast who has followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its inception, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I think about Cobie Smulders’ character Maria Hill. Her shocking demise in Secret Invasion left many fans, including myself, feeling a sense of loss and disappointment, especially given her significant contributions to the MCU since 2012’s The Avengers.

Reaching the end of her character’s journey in the series mirroring the famous Marvel Comics storyline, Maria Hill was abruptly written off, yet she remains eager to reprise her role in the MCU should the opportunity arise again. Despite the long-awaited show delivering unexpected twists and turns, many fans still lament its unfolding.

Additionally, discussions about the series have been fueled not only by criticisms of a dull narrative but also by contentious aspects such as Don Cheadle’s character Rhodey being a Skrull for an extended period, and the debut of a new super-powered, seemingly immortal character played by Emilia Clarke named G’iah. The death of Maria Hill in the initial episode of the show has further ignited debates among viewers on Disney+.

The abrupt death of a character in “Secret Invasion” was shocking and sparked online anger, considering Clark Gregg has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since 2012’s “The Avengers.” When Screen Rant asked if she might rejoin the MCU, the “How I Met Your Mother” star replied with a potential yes.

Of course! Definitely. If Marvel ever gives me a call, I’m there. I follow through with what they ask of me – well, that’s how it works for me.

Could Cobie Smulders Come Back?

In simpler terms, there are numerous inconsistencies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). For instance, Agent Phil Coulson, a character much like any other human, was resurrected for the TV series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” after his death in “The Avengers”. However, while both “The Avengers” and the comic book series “Secret Invasion” were well-liked, the latter’s MCU adaptation is often criticized as one of the worst. If a character like Maria Hill, who also died, were to be brought back, perhaps by revealing she was actually a Skrull (as has been done with others), or through some multiverse explanation, many fans might be willing to accept the change, despite it being a retcon (a rewrite of established continuity).

Ultimately, Kevin Feige and other key figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe make the decisions. However, given the storyline’s potential, it appears that Clark Gregg (Maria Hill) might be called back if they decide to continue her character’s journey within the Marvel universe. For now, the Marvel Universe will move forward without her, but fans can rewatch all of her memorable scenes, including her pivotal appearance in “Secret Invasion”, on Disney+.
