As a devoted fan of Cobra Kai, I can confidently say that the bond between Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) is hands down one of the most heartwarming relationships to grace the screen. The transformation of Johnny from a one-dimensional bully to a loving father figure underpins the core essence of the show, making it a true testament to redemption and growth.
In the hit series Cobra Kai on Netflix, the transformation of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) from his one-dimensional bully character in The Karate Kid to a loving father figure for Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña) has been one of the most heartwarming relationships portrayed throughout the show. At the beginning of Season 1, Johnny was grappling with life’s challenges until he crossed paths with Miguel at their apartment complex. The young boy played a significant role in helping Johnny find purpose and meaning in his life. Recently, both actors opened up about their characters’ special bond in an interview. Maridueña shared (as reported by Variety):
Experiencing the storyline with Billy (Zabka) has been the most rewarding aspect of this series for me. I’ve particularly enjoyed portraying the heartfelt bond between us, which I consider more like a found father-son relationship. Johnny’s character deeply desires to be a positive role model, while Miguel lacked a father figure in his life. In that respect, they complement each other well. They both learn and grow together, striving to become the best versions of themselves.
Since the initial season of the show, it became clear that one of Johnny’s flaws was his poor parenting towards his distant teenage son, Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan). Yet, when Miguel entered Johnny’s life, the profound love he received enabled Cobra Kai sensei to mend his relationship with Robby as well. Zabka mentioned during the same interview that:
What saddens Johnny deeply is realizing he wasn’t present for the birth of his own son. All he yearns for now is to reunite with his child. He feels an emptiness within him, which Miguel helps to fill. Miguel criticizes Johnny, saying he isn’t acting as a mentor and that he’s weak.
Suddenly, he gives Johnny strength. In the middle of that, there’s this kind of miraculous moment where his legs are working again [referring to Miguel recovering from his devastating injury in Season 3]. So, there’s this give and take in the beauty of this relationship.”
Johnny Finds Redemption Thanks to Miguel
The final chapter of “Cobra Kai” unfolds in Season 6 Part 3, airing in winter 2025, marking the conclusion of this beloved series. Throughout the story, Johnny’s character undergoes significant growth, transitioning from a hero to a nurturing father figure. The journey began when Johnny intervened to protect Miguel, Daniel LaRusso’s childhood tormentor, in the very first episode of the Netflix show. From that moment, Johnny and Miguel’s bond deepens.
Initially, Johnny was solely fixated on resurrecting Cobra Kai’s dojo. However, his relationship with Miguel transformed him from a antagonist in the Karate Kid series, to a mentor figure akin to Mr. Miyagi in the streaming show. And it’s hard to forget the devastating injury Miguel sustained during the Season 2 finale’s brutal school fight, which Johnny supported him through in Season 3. During the same interview, Maridueña stated:
I’ve had the profound experience of meeting Johnny when he was going through a particularly challenging time in his life. What truly resonates is not just the heartwarming, gentle instances we shared, but also the growth-inducing, tough-love moments that followed.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but appreciate the transformation of Johnny, a character I had the pleasure of portraying, into a loving, responsible figure for Robby, Miguel, and his yet-to-be-born daughter. In an interview, this evolved persona of mine also shared:
“The one thing Johnny needed in his life was this boy who needed him. It started to bring out the goodness in Johnny. This whole series has been him breaking down these walls and failing and making mistakes and being stuck in the ’80s and trying to evolve and grow. [Miguel] helps him do that.”
The second part of “Cobra Kai” Season 6 is currently streaming on Netflix, along with all other seasons in the continuation of “The Karate Kid”. In a heart-wrenching turn of events, one character meets an untimely end in the finale of Part 2. However, fans won’t have to wait long for the resolution, as the last five episodes will be released on February 13, 2025.
