The actors from Netflix’s Cobra Kai have disclosed their inspirations behind the show’s fight scenes. While they don’t handle the choreography of the fights in the series, it seems they contributed creatively to crafting specific sequences, drawing inspiration not only from martial arts legends but also some unexpected sources as well.
In the realm of the Karate Kid series, the TV program Cobra Kai recently wrapped up its six-season journey with a heartfelt finale. Starting this week on Netflix, the last five episodes have been released, sparking global conversations among fans. Although the show’s ending was heavier on emotional drama than martial art fights, the cast members shared their experiences with Entertainment Weekly about the action sequences, particularly those involving multiple fighters, such as the school fight in Season 2 and the chaotic battle at the Sekai Taikai in Season 6. Here is what Xolo Maridueña, who portrays Miguel Diaz in the show, had to say:
As a cinephile, I find myself drawing on my favorite martial arts films for inspiration, sharing ideas with our skilled stunt team. I’d say something along the lines of, “Look at this cool move in that movie, can we somehow work in a flip or a powerful kick like that?
Jacob Bertrand, the actor portraying Hawk in the series, elaborated further on his sources of inspiration: “Certainly, I was able to borrow a few moves from anime. I’d simply share clips from my favorite shows and express, ‘I like this, it would be great here, that would be cool there.’ It was enjoyable seeing these elements come to life in some of the fight scenes.
In the show, Jamie Buchanan, who goes by Robbie, mentions that he drew inspiration from one of his favorite films, Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” He recalls incorporating a move similar to one seen in the movie during the high school fight scene. However, he had to coordinate this with his stunt double, Caine Sinclair, to execute it effectively.
Regarding that particular wraparound kick in the movie, my stunt double, Caine Sinclair, and I are both big fans of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. It’s the one where they lift their legs high and make a sweeping side-kick.
We were pondering the feasibility of executing such a move, and we discovered if we employed the banister as our prop, we could perform jumps, twirls, and kicks, ultimately shoving Miguel against the wall. I was quite pleased with our ingenuity in incorporating this into our actions, and Caine felt the same way. It’s a secret skill we developed, but now, perhaps, it won’t be a secret anymore.
What’s Next in the ‘Cobra Kai’ Universe?
The popular series “Cobra Kai” has wrapped up its official run after six hilarious seasons filled with karate entertainment. However, this doesn’t signify the end for the show as spin-offs are being developed within the larger universe (MiyagiVerse). Interestingly, the creators of “Cobra Kai” have hinted at creating spin-offs, but they’ve only confirmed details for one so far: Rather than focusing on main characters like Miyagi, LaRusso, Johnny, Kreese, or Silver, the upcoming series will instead focus on two underappreciated characters from the show – Hawk and Demetri.
Moreover, it’s important to note that on May 30, 2025, the Karate Kid universe will continue to grow with the release of Karate Kid: Legends. This is the first feature film in the series in fifteen years. In this movie, Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso reprises his role. The story unfolds some time after the events of Cobra Kai, and it finds Daniel collaborating with Mr. Han, a character played by Jackie Chan in the 2010 remake. Together, they guide Li Fong (Ben Wang), a talented young martial artist from China who is participating in a karate competition in New York City under their tutelage.
