‘Cobra Kai’ Star’s New Horror Movie Is An Instant Streaming Hit

As a cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must admit that I’ve seen my fair share of haunted house movies, and ‘The Inheritance’ doesn’t exactly break new ground in the genre. However, it does have its charm, thanks largely to the star power of Peyton List and Bob Gunton.

Currently streaming is a chilling movie titled “The Inheritance,” featuring Peyton List from “Cobra Kai” and Bob Gunton. This film has been making waves on Hulu, climbing up to the number 4 spot on their charts just before Christmas in 2024. Despite an arduous path that included Netflix passing on the completed project back in January 2023, it eventually found distribution. With its mixed reception from both audiences and critics, there’s a question as to whether it will keep rising or plummet again.

The movie debuted both in selected cinemas and various streaming services on July 12, 2024. It was helmed by Alejandro Brugués (known for “Juan of the Dead” and “Satanic Hispanics”) as director, with screenplay by Joe Russo and Chris LaMont. Later, Netflix decided to cancel it, together with a film titled “House/Wife”, however, luckily Vertical Entertainment took over its distribution.

The Inheritance garnered a poor response from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received a 38% rating from professionals, while audiences gave it an even worse score of 28%. The situation isn’t much improved on IMDb, where viewers rated it a mere 4.7 out of 10. While the set design and ambiance are often praised, the script is criticized for being thin, and the characters are deemed underdeveloped. One must wonder if its success on Hulu will continue or if it will plummet again.

The movie seems to be thriving among viewers who are home during the holidays, giving them ample opportunity to watch multiple movies and series on various streaming platforms. Additionally, the popularity of its star, Mary Mouser (known for her role as Tory Nichols in the hit series Cobra Kai), piques the interest of fans eager to catch a new film she’s featured in. Alongside her work on Cobra Kai, Mouser has also appeared in other successful films and shows such as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, Bunk’d, and Girl Haunts Boy. Meanwhile, Robby Grunton has built a reputation as a versatile character actor, with roles spanning over four decades across various films and series including The Shawshank Redemption, 24, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

If you find yourself at home during the holidays, feeling a bit bored and in search of some affordable thrills, “The Inheritance” might offer an entertaining 84-minute experience. However, it’s best not to scrutinize the script or characters too much. If you’re looking for a movie with a bit more depth, I recommend you explore List’s other ghostly production, “Girl Haunts Boy”, which received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. “The Inheritance” is currently available on various streaming platforms.
