Martin Kove’s renowned character, John Kreese, shone brightly during the intense 13th episode of Cobra Kai Season 6 titled “Skeletons.” After a long wait of more than 40 years, fans of The Karate Kid finally got to see Kreese, who is usually despicable, find redemption for his heinous actions towards his student, Johnny Lawrence, played by William Zabka. Sadly, it seems that Kreese met his end in an explosion while fighting Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), but a different ending was filmed where Kreese surprisingly escaped the flames consuming Silver’s sunken yacht. In a conversation with People, Kove revealed:
Many viewers believe that the character could have emerged from the water alive instead. We did film a scene depicting this, showing me smoking my character’s signature cigar and picking up a magazine. Although Episode 15 suggests he didn’t perish, they decided not to include it because they felt it was a bit too cheesy. Despite the massive explosion on the ship, I can appreciate their reasoning. The ambiguity surrounding my character’s demise is somewhat questionable since he often survives during tense moments like these. Even as we approach the final season, the legacy of Cobra Kai will endure because Cobra Kai never truly fades away.
The creators of Cobra Kai called an alternate ending for a scene “cheesy.” This suggests that the cameo appearance of Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz in the final episode of Back to the Future may have been unnecessary and took up valuable screen time. Instead, they could have ended Season 6, Episode 15 with a less cheesy scene where Kreese and Johnny met for a meal, allowing for a satisfying conclusion to their storyline. However, actor Martin Kove is content with how Kreese’s character story was concluded, even though some fans may feel there should have been more.
Martin Kove Got ‘Exactly’ What He Wanted Out of Kreese’s Character Arc
Martin Kove had kept quiet about the details of John Kreese’s ending before the release of Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 3 in February. Despite hinting at his character’s redemption in numerous interviews prior to the debut of the Karate Kid spin-off series, fans were rewarded with a heartwarming scene where Kreese and Johnny (Zabka) shared tears and released decades of emotional tension in an episode titled “Skeletons.” Kove had been eagerly anticipating a complete display of Kreese’s humanity, and he was delighted to see that wish fulfilled as the series came to a close. In an interview, Kove expressed his satisfaction with how Kreese’s story concluded in Cobra Kai.
For quite some time, I’ve been emphasizing vulnerability in this character, with mixed results. However, the final outcome… it was profoundly satisfying. What appeals to me most is not just the action-packed scenes but the exploration of human emotion. I appreciate that they took the character from the depths of his struggles in The Karate Kid and developed him over the years. I agreed to join Cobra Kai only if they included sensitive scenes and depicted his transformation, which they did – gradually, across five seasons – precisely as I had envisioned.
You can stream or binge-watch all six seasons of the popular series “Cobra Kai” on Netflix. Although Martin Kove’s character arc as John Kreese has concluded, Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso will make another appearance this summer in the much-anticipated movie, “The Karate Kid: Legends.” In the film, set to release in cinemas on May 30th, Daniel’s mentor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), and his fellow karate master, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), will join forces to aid a young student named Li Fong (Ben Wang).
